Well, I still say that boxing is actually worse than football!

Sorry, but as far as I'm concerned, engaging in a sport where one might take several blows to the head, sounds awfully moronic to me.

Boxing (and being a good boxer) not only requires a level of intelligence, it requires a great deal of intelligence.
Only a complete moron would engage in something where one gets what's left of his shit-for-brains knocked out.
If you want to look at the basic elements of the sport then yes - boxing is about hitting and not being hit, but then we can do that about anything - chess is about moving wooden pieces around aboard, skiing is about going down a slippery, snowy hill fast on two planks of wood, gymnastics is about using your bodyweight to keep balance bleh bleh bleh - the fact that you would say that marks your opinion as one not to be taken seriously until you know a bit more about the sport that you are commenting on.
Sorry, But I have seen ex-boxers, and their speech is incoherent, they don't know what planet they're on most of the time, they slobber and drool, and some are even so far gone they crap in their britches.
Yes, I have seen boxers who are very eloquent. Having successful lives and are mentally astute. I have also known people who are incoherent, who slobber and drool and crap in their pants who have never laid a boxing glove in their life...
Yeah! Boxing requires intelligence.
It does! You'll have to take my word for it until you know a little bit more about the subject.
If you believe that, then I got a bridge to sell you, and perhaps I can interest you in some ocean front property in Arizona.
Not only do I believe that but can back it up with fact.
I also have the Empire State Building in my hip pocket.
Yeah? That wouldn't suprise me big boy!

Uh huh! Boxing requires intelligence.

BWWWUUUUUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Nice retort Einstein!

Look forward to your reply. x

Correct me if I'm wrong . . . . .

But I think doing calculus, solving complex mathematical equations, studying science, programming a computer, etc. etc. requires a Hell of a lot more intelligence and strategy than two morons putting on great big gloves and beating the holy crap out of each other.

Sports is for people too fucking stupid to do anything else.

And what really pisses me off is these drooling morons make more money than one who has a PhD in Quantum Physics.

Just goes to show the sense of values our society has.

Your big mistake is that you are compartmentalizing intelligence into the maths/science bracket - basically, I would put money on Shakespeare being crap at maths, does that make him stupid? I bet Winston Churchill was terrible at science in school - is he an idiot now? I bet Einstein would have made a terrible poet and Bill Gates couldn't write a requiem to save his life... Personally - most people accept 'intelligence' to be something much broader - this is where my mate Antigone comes in...
Sports is for people too fucking stupid to do anything else.
What? You mean like Mickey Walker - former world middleweight boxing champion and one of the greatest modern artists your country has ever produced - Mickey was in the league of Grandma Moses as a painter... but I am sure he doesn't measure on your level as an intellectual..
And what really pisses me off is these drooling morons make more money than one who has a PhD in Quantum Physics.
Unfortunatley - in a capitalist society - or the one you live in at least. Demand dictates monetary compensation. The few successful athletes in the few sports that command that kind of salary - football, soccer, basketball, baseball - they earn a huge amount of money - do you think a world class netballer or a world class judo player earns more than a doctor? You'll find most 'professional' sportspeople work as well as play sport for which they are modestly compensated for. And when they retire from the sport - the money dries up with it in most cases.
Just goes to show the sense of values our society has.
If anything - sport is one of the aspect of society that is a boon towards human nature and brings many positive benefits.

Anything, science, art, music, poetry, all these take more intelligence than two guys beating each other to a bloody pulp.
If anything - sport is one of the aspect of society that is a boon towards human nature and brings many positive benefits.
Sports has been of no benefit to me.

Quite the opposite!

Sports is responsible for the declining quality of education in our schools.

When I was (Oh God! do I have to keep repeating this over and over again?) in high school, my science teacher was also the school's football coach, and he was too fucking busy coaching his team of pre-frontally lobotomized baboons, so instead, he would set up the movie projector and walk out of the classroom leaving us all sitting in the dark watching a bunch of stupid cartoons.

I was once suspended from school because I failed to climb a rope in the gymnasium. Never mind that I had a crippled up left knee, the result of a car accident when I was 4 years old, and never mind that I was passing all my academic subjects.

NNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

In school, sports was more important to them.

No! Again I say! Sports has been of no benefit to me.

Sports fucked up my life!

So, please don't give me or anybody here any more bullshit about how boxing requires intelligence.

It doesn't!!!

Wrong! Wrong and wrong again! You don't know that because what you know about boxing, you could write on the back of a gnats arse using a marker pen and would probably involve the films of Sylvester Stallone. For you to comment as fact what level of intelligence it would take to become a decent boxer is based on your biases and prejudices and nothing in the way of concise fact.
If anything - sport is one of the aspect of society that is a boon towards human nature and brings many positive benefits

Sports has been of no benefit to me.
And I am going to be blunt here and say that you are the one person who is in dire need of physical exercise! Forgive me for saying that moderate exercise would help you with your health, self esteem, confidence and your life span - I know this because I am not all that much lighter than you (I weigh in around 342 lbs) but am big, strong and fit - I'll post a photo up, I am not saying I shouldn't lose weight but I do exercise and do keep myself healthy. If I had to walk places with a walking stick - I would do anything to redress the situation. I hate to think what sort of state I would be in now if I didn't exercise regulary.

Quite the opposite!

I have worked as a teacher in the South Korean school system where there is no organized sport but still there is bullying, comformity and probably the one country that outdoes any other with students suicides, this leads me to think that sport in school isn't the main reason why bullying exists in schools. I do actually think school is responsible for a lot of people to shy away from competitive sport, I do think school sport is repsonsible for a lot of people to not realise their physical potential and it is a real shame.

I'll let you into a secret... I hated sport at school - cross country runs and running around with a ball on some shitey muddy field was the pits but when I left school and wanted to join the army - I started running and I loved it! Then I took up boxing and I loved that even more. I was a heavyweight but I wasn't really all that strong at the weight so I took up weight training and I loved that even more! Even though I hated PE and vaulting over a wooden horse and climbing some goddamn rope - I knew that if I found some kind of physical exercise I enjoyed I could only benefit from it - as it turned out - I liked quite a lot of what I turned my hand to.
So based on conjecture and your personal experience - everyone who is involved in sport is an idiot and it is all a waste of time - I bet you weren't picked for the debating team were you? Can you try and leave out personal experience and conjecture out of a debate which requires facts - seeing as you are stating that people who play sport are stupid and all boxers are idiots.
I was once suspended from school because I failed to climb a rope in the gymnasium. Never mind that I had a crippled up left knee, the result of a car accident when I was 4 years old, and never mind that I was passing all my academic subjects.
So you went to a bad school. I want some facts to why sport is a waste of time and everyone who partakes in sport is an idiot?
In school, sports was more important to them.
You went to a bad school.
No! Again I say! Sports has been of no benefit to me.
I'd say not doing sports (or any kind of physical exercise) has been of less benefit to you. What does your doctor say about it?
Sports fucked up my life!
Being 400lbs is fucking up your life even more.
So, please don't give me or anybody here any more bullshit about how boxing requires intelligence.

It doesn't!!!
You know nothing about boxing!

Do you go around commenting about things you know absolutley nothing about? That is the sure sign of a cretin.

Come back and give your opinion when you have studied your subject matter a bit more - thanks!

Welcome to the forum, najib_daho. I do agree with you on the benefits of physical exercise and that it is good not to completely dismiss it. But I believe that Fat Man has got health problems that would prohibit him from undertaking exercise, such as having arthritis in both legs, so I wouldn't start forcing it on him because that will ultimately gain nothing. I myself visit the gym on a weekly basis to improve body strength and yes, I do hope to increase my self-esteem and confidence a bit by doing so, but gaining enormous arm muscles that could knock out a horse are not on the immediate agenda! By the way, I'm not fat. I am six feet tall and weigh just over 170 pounds at the moment. I would describe myself as being slightly underweight, actually. Not all of us here are against the idea of physical exercise. In fact, I don't think any of us are fully against it. What we are against is the overwhelming influence of sports in the modern society and the fact that if you don't like sports, you are insulted or even subject to harassment from your peers, especially in a high school setting, which was the case with me. And I'm sure you can appreciate how that can discourage people from remaining physically fit if all they're getting given is harassment whenever they try. I'm not against the idea of people playing or enjoying sports in any way, but I am against the idea of people making it seem that sports are the only acceptable pursuit in life and those who aren't immensely interested in them should be considered inferior in any way. That is the reason this forum exists - we need a place on the internet where we can speak out against the absurdity of the overhyped sports industry. I frankly find it absurd, the idea of someone who's good at playing sports getting superior treatment to everybody else, and being able to go through life easier and feel like "a better class of person" for something that is of relatively little benefit to society. I am not against physical fitness or exercise, but I AM against the absurd levels of prestige and payment that is endowed upon sports players today, and the fact that some of them are given a sort of license to do harm and get off with a lighter punishment on the sole grounds of their sporting prowess. I am sure you can see why I feel that side of the sporting culture is, frankly, ridiculous.

I'll answer you back, and I'll tack on some thoughts about your argument with Fat Man, but not here, since this is the "Introductions" thread. Instead, I plan to split from this thread and start a new one on boxing, unless someone else does so before then. Expect the new thread within the next few days.

Cheers,

Hello again Najib,

While you've been here you have made some interesting arguments in favour of the sport of boxing. It does seem to be a lot of use to some types of people. But you've also said stuff to dampen my enthusiasm for the sport. The thing is, I don't personally know many boxers, so your own sense of decency is really all I have to go on. Whether you like it or not, you are an ambassador for the game.

Do you see anything wrong with any of the following remarks?

What exactly is meant above by "on your level"? Sounds a bit personal to me. Fat Man claims a high IQ by the way, and I see no reason to doubt him. As evidence, I would point to his interest in complex subjects like Astronomy.

The thing is, I called you "polite" earlier, and Fat Man may have gotten the idea from that that I agreed with what you said to him.

Hi, I am new here, obviously XD. Well I joined because I hate sports, and always have ever since I was in elememtary school. I may be 16 but my rage and hatred for such barbabric activites such as sports, has built up since I was 7 years old. The main thing I hate about them is the fans and people who play them. The jocks at my school treat everyone like complete and utter shit, but yet their worshipped like gods. The fact that almost every girl wants to date these losers, even though they have no respect for women, confuses me, but It doesn't matter to me much because I'm not the one going to be slapped lol. I realy hate high school and how most of them are run... mainly how the money goes mainly to running and promoting these uneducational events. And at my school they keep taking money away from our library to fund these stupid distractions. I love the library, because I love to read. From manga to books on animals to cooking and fiction, I love all the library, (exept the sports books which some fatass donated and that section is even bigger than it should be....THEY SHOULD BE BURNED!!!!! ) Ahem, anyway I found this site after I had to do (Yes HAD for a participation grade  ) a survey on school sports. Some football jackass tried to erase my rant I put on there WHILE I was typing it. I slapped his hand and told him to suck it. He laughed and called me a fat nerd bitch (Very creative insult  , but still hurt, I mean just because I am a furry and an anime fan I am less of a person because I hate this shit called sports? And yes I may not be thin, but it's people like that I know that shouldn't get to me, but still make me very uncomfortable with my body) Anyway I googled I hate sports during study hall, and I found this forum :) . I honestly thought that I was the only one who felt like this about sports, but I'm glad I am not. I'm from the U.S.A and It makes me feel even more relieved that there are people all around the world who agree. Anyway sorry for droning on XD

Welcome to the forum, Mesi. Hope you like this site. We pretty much all hate sports here (except for a couple guys who are here to experiment with new peer groups or something  ). Anyway we seem to be a fairly mellow bunch here at the moment, even though most of us all hate sports as much as you do. I am glad you are here, though, and maybe your loathing for sports will liven things up a bit. It wasn't always this mellow at sportssuck.org, as you will see if you read the earliest posts.

I have a lousy internet connection at the moment, so I must go. But please stick around. Be sure to comment on the thread about "why you support the site" if you haven't already.

ROFL. That's funny, because that's exactly how I found the forum, too. We should take a poll, and I bet it would turn out that more than half the people here found the forum that way. :)

Hello and welcome to the forum. It was during my years at school when I began to properly hate sports and the bullying thugs that took their obsessions with them a bit too far. I'm alright with the idea of people enjoying and participating in different things to me. We can't all be the same. But why won't some idiots just get that fact into their head - everyone has different interests? There are plenty of sports fans out there who will definitely treat you with somewhat of an air of contempt and resentment if you make it known that you don't share their interest in sports, and the thing I hate the most is those morons who think that life is just one big playing field and feel the need to take their aggression off the court and unleash it on other people who they consider inferior to them. You call those people "jocks" over in America, but over here in Britain we have no particular name for sports bullies. The bullies over here are called "Chavs" and they have a reputation for doing as little as possible - just smoking, skiving off school and harassing the general public out on the streets, as well as indulging in various other crimes. They are associated with wearing sports clothes, like football strips and tracksuit bottoms, but I'd hardly say the Chav group was that athletic on the whole. Nonetheless, there are plenty of athletic bullies over here as well who feel the need to extend their aggressive, dominating attitudes beyond the court and make life hard for those they view as being "different". I had many experiences with people like that in my younger days. I definitely don't think everyone who plays sports is bad, but what I will say is that sports do increase one's aggressive drive and the need to be "top dog" all the time and can therefore aid the establishment of a bullying mindset. That's not to say there aren't any nice sportsmen, but there are plenty who are hardly pleasant fellows. I hope you return to the forum, because there are plenty of objections to make against the modern sporting world, and the overbearing, belligerent fans and players are my main concern as well, especially in a school setting. Take care now.

Welcome to the forum. I'm glad to see that more people are joining, and even of my age too! But you're only slighty older than me by 2 small years. Interesting to see that your hate for sport stemmed from as early as elementary. For me, I had started to detest it by 7th grade due to the mandatory-sport style PE that the PE department had forced on the students. Many people enjoyed it, but I did not. But let's just save that for another day, I'm gonna try to respond to parts of your post that I especially liked or had stirred me to respond. So bear with me if it becomes a long post.

This is far too true, at least in the area where I live in. Sports are really popular here in Southern California, even as much as to warrant freshman teams. Also, I come across a lot of jocks since my computers teacher is the head football coach. The freshmen football jocks are the ones that irritate me the most. For one thing, they have known me during elementary or middle, so apparently they are able to distinguish me from the crowd. Plus, they're terribly annoying and are complete jerks. I'm not saying all of them are, but a majority of them just annoy me to no end. Their egos are terribly big, and have been inflated even more as I heard that they were on some sort of winning streak that I could care less about! If most of them become varsity players, I'll have to see them get worshipped and their ego-inflated minds will no longer be able to popped! And yet they treat us like we're nothing important...

I'm also fond of the library myself. There are some sports books, but I don't know how much. I really agree that they're just a waste of space. Higher quality books that could actually educate students in other important matters could be put in their place. This is one of those times where I wish sports wasn't so popular.

I'm really sorry to hear that you have to put up with name calling just because you don't like sports. It really hits home for me as I've been made fun of in the past, and the number of times is too much to count. They make fun of me because I didn't like sports or liked something considered feminine, it's like taking away our freedom of choosing pretty much. Don't try to let their insults get to you.

Don't be sorry that you droned on, it's quite okay to rant here as long as it's civilized. And trust me, you're definitely not alone as a sport hater. We just wish that there would be more people to speak up and not be so intimidated. Hopefully you become a regular.
