Epic argument

Post by natmanhan »

My epic argument with a school sports supporter: http://www.st2k.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=5621

Never really have got along well with him since he basically said the N64 is totally superior to PS1.

Welcome to sportssuck! I skimmed through the argument and I agree with you that it was kinda of lame for him when he had nothing really to fight with so he brought up the topic of video games. I"m sure some "jocks" play more virtual sports than real ones.

they keep coming back with the same old, tired arguments, don't they? That sports keep kids out of trouble. I think that's been said so often that everyone just accepts it as fact. But I don't think it's true. From my experience when a bunch of guys get together, for whatever reason, there's much more opportunity for trouble.

Thank you for the welcome! Yup, that was lame, especially on a gaming website. As for the trouble thing, very true. I remember when I was in Cross Country three years ago a bunch of guys ran through a grocery store for no apparent reason, and another time they all went to McDonald's, got free water, and splashed it on us. Those were just fun though, the only bad incident was a hazing one where they duck taped some kid on the first day (this was before I was in it though). He quit immediately after that. Smart kid. We also got into "wars" with the girls tennis team, where they would attack us with tennis balls and we would retaliate with water balloons.

The whole "keeping kids out of trouble" thing is utter nonsense, IMHO it's all based on ones perception of things.

If a kid who doesn't play sports decides to do drugs and get into trouble then they say "had that kid played sports, he wouldn't have got into trouble".

If that same kid plays sports, decides to take steroids and he and his lacrosse team decide to gang-rape some girl they say "boys will be boys".

Innocent until proven guilty, they weren't proven guilty, so therefore they are innocent.\

There's plenty more good people in sports than bad ones. Won't get into specific examples though.

I would hope so, because there's a lot of people in sports. Doesn't mean it can't bring out the dark side though.

Come on LOL

Saying sports are bad because of specific examples is the equivilant of saying:

Computer use is bad because there are hackers.
Television is bad because some actors drug abuse
and the list goes on!

So far I have been rwading through here and the people of this site dismiss the arguements for sports based on thier own narrow bias. However, they are quick to judge the opposite spectrum for dismissing thier opinion, kind of funny. It seems that there are no real reasons against sports, that cannot be made against anything in life. It would appear that the people on this site would just like to go back in time and steal popularity from people they feel gained it from sports. Its time to drop the Envy and attempt to move on with your lives. Sports have helped many people, and targeting sports because bad things can happen with athletes is not a good arguement, nor are any arguements I have seen. Sports have helped communities, countries, and individuals......some people just have a jealousy that they cannot let go which is very childish.

So why do either of you care whether or not any of us here like sports or not?

I'm going to tel you what I tell the JW's when they come to my door trying to "recruit" others into their religion, leave your pamphlets by the door and I'll throw them away, er... read them, later.

No, it isn't. Jealousy is a human emotion that does not cease to exist when you become an adult. Honestly, if you haven't seen any good arguments against sports here, and you think this is all about popularity or something, then you are probably just as narrow minded as you claim people here are. Why shouldn't sports be targeted? Obviously you have this own little hate cult of your own against this site, so that's a bit hypocritical of you. They are judgmental because they've been jaded by missionaries preaching the gospel of sports, or in another words- people like you. Go back in time and steal the popularity? What the hell? Somebody has quite an imagination. Yes, sports have helped some people, and so has this site.
