ELLEFONTE, Pa. â?? Jerry Sandusky, the former Penn State assistant football coach, was convicted Friday of sexually abusing nine young boys, completing the downfall of a onetime local hero in a pedophilia scandal that seized national attention.

The jury in Centre County Court returned its verdict on its second day of deliberation. He was convicted of 45 of the 48 counts against him.

The charges against Sandusky, 68, shook Penn State to its roots last year, ending the careers of Joe Paterno, the universityâ??s famed head coach, and its longtime president Graham B. Spanier, and prompting debate and soul-searching over the role of big-time college sports and of trusted men in childrenâ??s lives.

Sandusky, who had been Paternoâ??s longtime defensive coordinator, founded a charity, the Second Mile, to work with troubled youths, which prosecutors said he used as his private hunting ground, scouting for potential victims. What no one disputed was that he was continually in the company of one or more of those boys, taking them to workouts and football games, giving them gifts, having them sleep at his home and even showering with them.

Eight men who said they had been victimized by Sandusky as boys testified during the trial, offering graphic and disturbing accounts of repeated assaults by Sandusky â?? on the Penn State campus or in the basement of Sanduskyâ??s home.
And here's more!!!

Jerry Sandusky is a former assistant coach for the Penn State football team who served under Joe Paterno, the legendary figure who brought the team and the campus to national prominence. Sandusky retired as defensive coordinator in 1999 but remained a well-known figure at the school, in part through his charity work.

In 2008, an investigation began into an allegation that Sandusky had molested a boy he had met through his charity work. In November 2011, Sandusky was arrested and charged with 40 counts of child sex abuse involving eight young boys over a 15-year span. Charges were later added related to two other boys.

The news set off a week of turmoil that led to the firing of Paterno and the dismissal of Graham B. Spanier, one of the longest-serving and highest-paid university presidents in the nation.

The scandal centered on the schoolâ??s handling of allegations involving Sandusky. Former Penn State athletic director Tim Curley and former finance official Gary Schultz were arrested and charged with failing to report an incident.

Paterno came under fire for not having reported a rape allegation against Sandusky to the police. Instead, he referred it to Curley and took no further action. Paterno, 84, died in January.

In December, in a nearly four-hour interview, Sandusky insisted he had never sexually abused any child, but he confirmed details of some of the events that prosecutors have cited in charging him with 48 counts of molesting young boys, all of whom came to know Sandusky, 68, through the charity he founded, known as the Second Mile.

Opening Arguments

Sanduskyâ??s trial began on June 11, 2012. In their opening arguments, prosecutors told jurors that Sandusky kept a private list of boys the charity was helping. That list, they suggested, amounted to his own sort of scouting report on potential targets for him to abuse, complete with asterisks next to some of the names and notations about their hair color, shoe size, whether they had parents and other details.

In his opening statement to the jury, Sanduskyâ??s lawyer, Joseph Amendola, said that Sandusky had a long history of helping children and that he and his wife, who were unable to bear children, had formally adopted six of them. The gifts Sandusky gave children were out of a genuine desire to improve their lives, Amendola said, and his affection for them was being distorted by the prosecution.

Graphic Testimony for the Prosecution

On the trialâ??s first day, one of Sanduskyâ??s accusers took the witness stand at the Centre County Courthouse in Bellefonte, Pa., and offered several hours of methodically disturbing, often graphic accounts of sexual assault. That accuser, now 28, said that Sandusky repeatedly had sexual contact with him in locker rooms and showers on the Penn State campus and other locations over several years starting in 1997, when he was 13.

In his testimony, the man said he had been recommended to Sanduskyâ??s charity, the Second Mile, by a school guidance counselor because of problems he was having at home. In mid-1997, Sandusky took a liking to him, he said, playing basketball, racquetball and other sports with him after school, introducing him to Penn State football players and taking him to bowl games in Florida and Texas.

Sandusky bought the boy golf clubs, snowboards and hockey equipment, and invited him to stand on the sidelines at Penn State home games, the man said.

But Sandusky also showered regularly with the boy, during which he began having soap fights and then fondling him, the man testified. Over time, Sanduskyâ??s advances became more forceful and sexual, including wrestling the boy to the ground and forcing him to perform oral sex, he testified.

They never spoke openly about their illicit interactions, which the man said occurred dozens of times.

Defense Suggests Money Was Motive for Accusers

Sanduskyâ??s lawyers sought to undermine the scheduled testimony of accusers by suggesting that they were out to get money. Amendola had the first accuser read from a number of letters that Sandusky wrote to the boy urging him to focus on his studies and sports.

The accuser, though, said he received those letters after he started to distance himself from Sandusky, who, he said, continued to call his house and try to meet him. The accuser called other letters that Sandusky wrote to him in neat script and on Penn State stationery â??creepy.â?

Amendola raised questions about why the accuser had brought a lawyer with him when speaking with the police and the grand jury during the long investigation into Sanduskyâ??s conduct, suggesting that perhaps he had a financial incentive to manufacture his tale of abuse.

Amendola asked the accuser whether anyone had seen him in any uncomfortable situations with Sandusky in the shower. The accuser said that one time, Tom Bradley, another former assistant coach at Penn State, walked into the shower when he and Sandusky were together. The accuser sensed that Bradley was suspicious because he stayed there until the boy left.

Bradley ultimately took over as interim head coach after Paternoâ??s dismissal.

Letters a Focus of Testimony

A central focus of the first dayâ??s testimony in the governmentâ??s case against Sandusky were the letters that he wrote to one of the alleged victims of his sexual advances. The alleged victim called some of them â??creepy love lettersâ? and prosecutors implied Sandusky wrote them as a way to maintain control over the boy.

Mr. Amendola, Sanduskyâ??s lawyer, filed a motion to rebut the assertion that they were proof of â??grooming behavior.â? He asked to be able to call as a witness a psychologist who would show that â??the words, tones, requests, and statements made in the letter are consistent with a person who suffers from a Histrionic Personality Disorder,â? the motion said.

The disorder is one in which a person has a need for excessive attention. A person suffering from that disorder, the motion continued, â??would not necessarily be to groom or sexually consummate a relationship in a criminal mannerâ?¦â?

Mike McQueary Testifies

On June 12, Mike McQueary, a former Penn State graduate assistant, testified. He said he saw Sandusky and a boy in a shower on the Penn State campus in 2001, with the front of Sanduskyâ??s body against the back of the boy. McQueary spoke authoritatively and politely during his testimony.

The day also included emotional testimony from a second accuser. Now 18 years old, the man testified that he began going to summer camps run by Second Mile charity when he was about 11 years old. After attending several camps, he said, he began to have regular contact with Sandusky, frequently sleeping at his house when there were no other children there. He said Sandusky made numerous sexual advances toward him while he slept in the former coachâ??s basement. He said Sandusky performed oral sex on him and encouraged him to do the same to him.

When he tried to distance himself from the relationship, the accuser said, Sandusky confronted his mother and contended that the boy was not spending enough time with him. Eventually, he said, his mother called a state youth services agency and an investigation was initiated.

The often sobering account was followed by an aggressive cross-examination by Mr. Amendola, who attempted to show that the alleged victim had told different versions of his story to state troopers, psychologists and the grand jury.

The man admitted to telling different investigators and grand juries different numbers for how often he had oral sex with Sandusky.

Eight Young Men and One Mother on the Witness Stand

In the first week of the trial, a total of eight young men gave graphic and, at times, excruciating testimony about being sexually abused by Sandusky and spoke of the lingering emotional trauma they had experienced.

The prosecutionâ??s case concluded on June 18 with testimony from the mother of one of the young men, who said she regretted not recognizing sooner that her son was being exploited.

Despite the boyâ??s objections, the mother said, she urged her son to spend time with Sandusky because the boy had no father at home and she was working two jobs at the time. During the time the boy, then in his early teens, was with Sandusky, he developed a host of problems, including stomach pains and sleep deprivation.

The young man, the eighth of eight accusers to testify against Sandusky, said in court that he was forced to have oral and anal sex with Sandusky from about the time he was 13 until he was 16. He is now 18.

Defense Suggests Police Coached Accusers

Trying to cast doubt on testimony that Sandusky accused boys, his lawyers suggested that the accusers made those charges only after the police told them that others had told similar tales.

Two state troopers who investigated the case acknowledged, under questioning by the defense lawyers, Joseph L. Amendola and Karl Rominger, that some of the accusers first insisted that little or nothing sexual had happened involving Sandusky, but later told more damning stories in second and third police interviews.

Amendola repeatedly asked if, in trying to coax possible victims into talking, the investigators had told the young men that other people had made accusations against Sandusky. The troopers, Cpl. Scott F. Rossman and Joseph A. Leiter, a corporal who is now retired, said they had done so.

Leiter at first said he did not tell any of the witnesses about specific allegations, objecting to the suggestion that he had, for example, mentioned oral sex. But the defense later played a recording of an April 2011 interview with one of the accusers, in which Leiter was much more explicit, referring to oral sex.

Dorothy Sandusky Testifies

On June 19, Dorothy Sandusky â?? loyal wife, partner in charitable work, mother to six adopted children and an ever present adult in the house prosecutors portrayed so darkly â?? took the witness stand.

Nervous, often wide-eyed, she spoke of her marriage and her husband and her belief that his aim had always been to help not hurt children, inside her home or anywhere else. For 40 minutes, she hunched forward in a pale green blouse and matching sweater, and the 12 jurors leaned forward to hear her.

At one point, Mrs. Sandusky, 69, was asked if she had ever seen inappropriate contact between her husband and the many young boys he met through the charity for disadvantaged children that he ran.

She paused. The courtroom was silent.

She then said the only time she could recall, it was a boy being overly affectionate with her husband.

Mrs. Sandusky testified that many of the accusers continued to visit him years after the alleged abuse, well into adulthood â?? a point Mr. Amendola brought her back to again and again. One man brought his girlfriend and infant child to meet the Sanduskys just two or three years ago, she said.

Asked what she knew at the time of a 1998 police and child welfare investigation into her husbandâ??s conduct with a minor, Mrs. Sandusky said she understood that he had showered with a boy, that it had been looked into and that the matter had been dropped. That boy, now in his late 20s, testified the week before that Mr. Sandusky had abused him.

But Mrs. Sandusky said the young man had visited them last summer, and â??he went out to dinner with us,â? she said. In fact, she said, it was one of many pleasant visits they have had over the years with the man.

On cross-examination, prosecutors treated Mrs. Sandusky gently, not pointedly challenging her testimony or questioning her actions. The only sharp exchange occurred when Joseph McGettigan, senior deputy state attorney general, twice paraphrased her testimony as saying that Mr. Sandusky would descend to the basement to put the visiting boys to bed, and both times she objected.

â??I didnâ??t say he would put them to bed,â? Mrs. Sandusky said firmly. â??He would go down and tell them good night.â?

Closing Arguments

In closing arguments on June 21, Sanduskyâ??s lead lawyer, Mr. Amendola, said the case against him defied common sense.

To convict Sandusky, â??you have to believe he was the boldest perpetrator in history, taking these kids out, showering with them in front of other coaches,â? Amendola said. â??It doesnâ??t add up. It makes no sense, absolutely no sense.â?

He stressed that the earliest allegations against Sandusky, now 68, date to the 1990s. â??After all these years, when Jerry Sanduskyâ??s in his mid-50s, he decidesâ? to be a pedophile, Amendola said. â??Does that make sense to anybody? He was involved with kids from the time he was a kid.â?

But a prosecutor, Mr. McGettigan, appealed to the jury to recall how pained and nervous the accusers, now young men, were to tell their stories. For victims in such cases, he said, â??humiliation, shame and fear equal silence,â? leading to years of evasions before the truth comes out.

McGettigan said Sandusky exhibited the classic behavior of a predatory pedophile, lavishing attention and gifts on troubled and neglected children and getting them accustomed to the abuserâ??s touching before attempting any sexual contact.

Adoptive Son Offered to Testify

Hours after the jury began deliberating the charges against Sandusky, lawyers for one of his adopted children said that he had been abused by Sandusky and had offered to testify in the case.

â??During the trial, Matt Sandusky contacted us and requested our advice and assistance in arranging a meeting with prosecutors to disclose for the first time in this case that he is a victim of Jerry Sanduskyâ??s abuse,â? the lawyers, Andrew Shubin and Justine Andronici, said in a statement. â??At Mattâ??s request, we immediately arranged a meeting between him and the prosecutors and investigators.â?

The statement gave no details and no indication why prosecutors did not call Matt Sandusky to the testify, but it raises the possibility of new criminal charges against Sandusky after the case concludes. The lawyers did not return calls.

One of Jerry Sanduskyâ??s lawyers, Karl Rominger, declined to respond or to say whether the prospect of facing Matt Sanduskyâ??s accusation was one reason Jerry Sandusky did not testify in his own defense. Rominger said a judgeâ??s order prevented the lawyers from commenting.

Matt Sandusky, 33, has been a peripheral presence in the case since it broke into public view in fall 2011. He was involved in the Second Mile, prosecutors said, and then, at about age 11, went to live with the Sanduskys, at first as a foster child.

After his adoptive fatherâ??s arrest, Matt repeatedly denied being abused and accompanied the family in public shows of support.

But his biological mother told The Patriot-News of Harrisburg that Sandusky, in effect, stole her son from her. Her husband, Mike Long, said in a November interview that Mattâ??s behavior worsened after he was sent to the Sanduskys and that soon after moving there, he ran away at night in a torrential rainstorm.

Background: The Investigation

A critical break in the investigation of Jerry Sandusky came via a posting on the Internet: a random mention that a Penn State football coach, years before, might have seen something ugly, but kept silent.

Investigators with the Pennsylvania attorney generalâ??s office had by 2010 already come to the conclusion that Sandusky was a serial molester, according to people with knowledge of the case. But what had started with a complaint of sexual assault from a high school freshman had grown to include another matter altogether: whether Penn State had acted to cover up Sanduskyâ??s behavior, even crimes.

Working off the brief mention on an Internet forum where people chatted about Penn State athletics, investigators narrowed their list of coaches likely to have seen something to Mike McQueary, then an assistant coach and the football programâ??s recruiting coordinator.

Investigators set up a meeting in an out-of-the-way parking lot. There, McQueary unburdened himself. He needed little prompting.

McQueary told of a horrific scene he had stumbled upon as a graduate assistant one Friday night in March 2002: a naked boy, about 10, hands pressed against the locker room wall of the Lasch Football Building, being raped by Sandusky. McQueary was explicit and unequivocal, the people said. He had told Paterno about the incident the next day, but he was filled with regret that nothing had happened.

And after McQueary had reported what he had seen to the universityâ??s senior officials, those officials not only never told the police, but they also never even informed the universityâ??s top lawyer. That lawyer, Wendell Courtney, has said that he would have been duty bound to report to law enforcement officials any allegations of inappropriate conduct toward children by Sandusky.

In November, Penn State put McQueary on administrative leave. The university said â??multiple threatsâ? had been made against McQueary. The anger at McQueary appeared to center on his failure to stop the alleged rape and call the police.

A Parallel Investigation

In 2009, when the case first landed in the office of the attorney general, no one knew where it would lead. The mother of a Clinton County, Pa., freshman called the local high school to report that her son had been sexually assaulted by Sandusky. Sandusky was barred from the school, where he had served as a volunteer coach, and the matter was reported to the authorities.

The district attorney in Centre County, where Sandusky was alleged to have molested the boy, passed the case on to the attorney general.

The Clinton County teenager â?? Victim 1, as he would become known in the grand jury report made public in November 2011 â?? alleged that he first met Sandusky through the Second Mile charity when he was 11 or 12. Sandusky had indecently fondled him and performed oral sex on him, the boy said.

But prosecutors, lacking physical evidence of an assault, worried about the fortunes of a case that might end up with little more than competing claims â?? by the boy and by Sandusky. To make a charge stick, they concluded, they needed to explore whether one boyâ??s claims were merely one among others, perhaps many.

The answer to their question, it turned out, lay in a voluminous police report sitting for a dozen years in the old case files of the Penn State University Police. Investigators for the attorney generalâ??s office had heard rumors that Sandusky had come to the attention of law enforcement officials sometime in the past, but they were not sure when or where.

The investigators began calling around to nearby police departments; they received a hit when they reached the campus police.

In 1998, an 11-year-old boy, now known as Victim 6, had come home with wet hair and told his mother he had showered with Sandusky at Penn Stateâ??s athletic complex. She immediately reported it to the university police, the grand jury report said.

As investigators leafed through the old report â?? it ran close to 100 pages â?? they came to believe that the campus police officers had truly wanted to make a case against Sandusky, according to those with knowledge of the investigation. The officers had gone so far as to set up a sting operation in which the boyâ??s mother called the coach, and, with the police listening in, confronted Sandusky.

According to the grand jury report, he admitted to showering with her son and another boy, said he did not think that his private parts had touched her son, but acknowledged that what he did was wrong.

Ultimately, the district attorney decided against taking the case to trial, a decision that, years later, the attorney generalâ??s investigators could understand. According to people with knowledge of the current Sandusky case, the district attorneyâ??s decision in 1998 was a close call, even with the evidence the campus police had.

But what most struck the investigators, according to people with knowledge of the case, was that the university itself seemed to have done nothing in the wake of the police investigation.

Second Mile Charity

Sandusky had access to hundreds of boys through Second Mile, a foundation for needy children that he founded in 1977.

The intertwined relationship between Penn State, its football program and the Second Mile charity has been a focus of the scandal.

According to the grand jury report, the charity learned almost a decade ago that Sandusky had showered with a young boy. Like Penn State officials, it did not inform police.

Second Mile said it accepted the resignation of Jack Raykovitz, its chief executive for 28 years, and that it had opened an internal investigation.

In late May, the charity said it was seeking court approval to shut down and transfer its programs to a Texas-based youth ministry that serves abused and neglected children.
I hope they put Jerry Sandusky away for life, so far away he won't be able to hear the dogs barking.

WOW! He sure is one ugly mutha fucka!!!

Yeah! A boot print on his face would be a great improvement in his looks!

He has a face that only a mother could love! A mother crocodile!

Sorry! I take that back! That was an insult to crocodiles! My apology to crocodiles!

It's a well known scientific fact, that most pedophiles have a lower than average IQ and that the kids he molested were probably far more intelligent than he is.

Yeah! Sandusky is a total fucking retard! He even looks retarded!

I bet he drools! Uh huh! A chronic drooler!

Having been sexually molested or raped can leave one emotionally devastated for a long time.

This is why I support the death penalty for pedophiles and rapists.

Oh! They're really gonna love him when he goes from Penn State to the state pen!

Yeah! They're really gonna to love him over there! They'll love him to pieces!

They'll have to put him in a separate cell block for pedo-tards like him!

He'll be at the very bottom of the pecking order!

Nah! I think they should just throw him into a regular cell block!

It would be like tossing a hunk of raw meat to a pack of hungry wolves!

They'll literally rip him to peaces!!!

I can only hope that the victims are able to find peace in all of this. I wonder if Sandusky is capable of feeling guilt for his crimes. A very sick individual.

No, I doubt very much if Sandusky felt any guilt after sexually molesting boys. He's a sociopath.

I doubt if he feels anything.

But, I can very well imagine that during his first day in prison, he's going to feel really scared, and feel like shitting in his pants.

It will probably be the first time in his worthless pathetic little life that he has ever felt anything at all.

Yeah! I'll venture to say, that, He'll feel something alright!

And I can promise, it won't feel good!

It's really gonna to suck to be him!
