Olympic star begs judge for leniency for killer brother

Post by Lewis »

They were once both promising athletes with the world at their feet.

But as one brother aims for a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics, the other is starting a life sentence for murder.

Andre Mason - the brother of high jumper Germaine Mason, who won a silver medal at last year's Beijing Games - was this week convicted alongside two of his fellow gang members for killing a 22-year-old student.

Yasin Abdirahman, who was studying at London Metropolitan University, was stabbed in the chest and head near his home in Southall, West London, in September 2007.

He died eight days later of brain injuries.

The Old Bailey heard how Andre, then just 14, was part of a 'pack' who 'hunted down' Mr Abdirahman after he was mistaken for a rival gang member.

Germaine, 26, who is currently training in Jamaica, claimed his brother had acted 'totally out of character' and wrote to the judge to plead for his sentence to be reduced.

But Recorder of London Peter Beaumont, QC, said: 'You come from a good family but the boy they describe stands oddly with the boy the evidence reveals.

'Even after your conviction for murder you continue to regard your co-defendants as a group of supportive friends.

'It is of even greater concern that you have found comfort in your peer group who have reaffirmed the acceptability of your behaviour and rewarded you with members of the group giving you protection and status in prison where you continue to demonstrate no real remorse or shame for your actions.'

He also lifted restrictions banning the naming of the defendants. The court heard how Andre, now 16, was a promising student and athlete who had won several trophies in junior athletic competitions.

However, while attending Acton High School in West London he became a member of the MDP - 'Money, Drugs, Power' - gang.

He was living with his mother Carol and three brothers, including Germaine, in Acton when he murdered Mr Abdirahman.

He was told he must serve at least 13 years in prison.

After sentencing, Mrs Mason spoke of her feelings for the victim's family but said she too felt like she 'had lost a son'.

She also denied that Andre was still a member of the gang.

Germaine, who was born in Kingston, Jamaica but has dual nationality because his father is English, was chosen to to represent Britain in 2006.

He is close friends with Usain Bolt, the world's fastest man and winner of three gold medals at Beijing.

He should be sent to prison, and should not be given leniency becuase of his brother.

They should have put Andre Mason not IN the jail, but UNDER the jail!!!

He should be put so far away that he won't be able to hear the dogs barking!

A 13-year prison sentence for the crime of murder is nothing! (What about the sentence that the murder victim has received? How long does that last?) And that soft sentence should be reduced? Give me a break! As happens so often, attention is focused on the murderer while the murder victim is often forgotten. How about the surviving loved ones of the victim and the deep grief that they experience? The parents of murdered children frequently have their lives ruined. I'm sick and tired of the misplaced compassion that bleeding hearts have for murderers.

Yeah! A 13 year term in prison you can practically do standing on your head!

That's easy time for murder!

The student he killed could have been another Einstein, another Carl Sagan, another winner of the Nobel Peace Prize.

But no! his life was tragically cut short by some drooling moronic imbecilic monkey-boy who probably smelled like the inside of a fisherman's boot!

Any jock who kills a student should serve a life sentence in a 16th century style prison without electricity, indoor plumbing or flush toilets.

And if they should develop a chronic disease like diabetes or any type of life threatening disease, then they should receive only the same kind of medical treatment that was available back in the 16th century.

And if they die, then too fucking bad!!!

Lol? So what are you trying to say Tyranid? That murder is fine if it wasn't an athlete who did it? Well Tyranid, that's why you got kicked out of the Ork Faction.

I commend you for saying so. And I applaud your restraint in disagreeing with us.

I understand the guy who did the murder here was not an athlete, but this is not the first time somebody connected to sports in some way has committed some sort of horrendous crime. I'm just sick of all celebrities getting lighter sentences and normally being allowed to expect easier punishments. Nobody should be given preferential treatment because of celebrity status or wealth. Everyone should be given the same amount of punishment for their crimes regardless of anything. In fact, the sports players should get more time as particularly rugby players are merely just thugs who can't do anything else but grunt, tackle other people and hold a ball. When you take them off their beloved pitch, all they're good for is violence and being a general menace to society. Have you read the "Ban Ben Cockayne" article in this website's 2009 letters? It seems that sports players do get treated as gods and can get away with almost anything. Really, I demand the bastards don't get given the satisfaction of knowing they're above the law, and that can be done by giving the nasty ones the harsh punishments they deserve! They do these things because society makes them feel they can get away with it. We shouldn't let them!

I THINK ALL SPORTS ARE TOTAL RUBBISH. THEY SHOULD BE BANNED FROM TV. THEN ALL PEOPLE WHO TAKE PART IN THE SPORTS SHOULD BE PUT AGAINST A WALL AND SHOT AND KILLED.

I agree with you Katrin, but he was an athlete and they tried to pull that card in court according to the article.

"The court heard how Andre, now 16, was a promising student and athlete who had won several trophies in junior athletic competitions."

Polite24, good move, very honorable. Thank you.

Lol, if this guy gets a reduced sentenced I'd get pissed. Although since he's a ONLY a celebrity's brother than the chances of getting of easy is less but if it happens than that's even just as unreasonable if he got off just for being one(in this case a jock).

Lol, nice warhammer 40K reference, I'd have to say he isn't even worthy of such an the insult. He's more of a fanatical imperial guardsman with no special powers or abilities, and of course expendable(send him to the frontlines! ).
"We believe in Vader, the Darth almighty, destroyer of Alderaan and the Sith. We believe in Luke, his only son, our Jedi. He was concieved by the power of the Force, and born of the senator Padme. Suffered under Darth Sidius, electrocuted, survived and partied with Ewoks. He descended to the Death Star, on the third hour he flew out in an Imperial ship and landed on Endor. He is seated on the right hand of Obi-Wan's ghost. He will come again to train Leia to be a Jedi. We believe? in Yoda.........:D
