International I Hate Sports Club

OK, I have been a registered Democrat ever since I was old enough to vote.

I voted for Obama. I like Obama. I do think he's kind of cute and all that, but I have to agree, he seriously needs to grow a pair.

I'm actually disgusted with both parties, Democrats and Republicans, or rather, the Retardicans!

Yeah, I'm ashamed to say that my Democratic party has become a party of wussies and ball-less wonders, while the Republicans are a party of moronic bullies and fucking retards!

Obama is not stupid. He's actually quite intelligent, but he needs to grow a pair of balls to back up his brains. Obama has been too willing to compromise on his position. He needs to get some guts! I don't care how and where he gets them, either buy them, or grow some in a flower pot, I don't give a flying fuck how he gets 'em! But he dose need to get some guts!

In this world of cut-throat politics, it's not enough to have brains. One must have brains AND balls! And I don't mean base, basket, or foot either. I mean, BALLS! BIG BALLS!

Obama's got the brains. But now, he just need some balls.

The Republicans are like the bullies on the school grounds. Now I think I know what became of the bullies I encountered while going to school. They all became Republicans when they grew up. That is, when they grew up physically, but mentally they never grew up, they're still moronic retarded Kindergartners in the Romper Room crowd.

But, what can you expect from idiots who were never serious about getting an education, disrupting the classrooms, throwing spit wads and paper airplanes, destroying art and science projects, stealing and ripping pages out of notebooks, and learning only how to fold paper footballs.

Yeah, I think I know why the Republicans hate science and education. They just want our children grow to up ignorant and uneducated, so that they will be more likely to vote Republican and give their money away to Pat Robertson and his 700 Club who backs up the Republican party. It's all a big scam.

Now I know why my 5th grade teacher bashed my head against the brick wall in an argument over an Astronomy book he would not allow me to check out of the school library. I believe he was trying to kill me!

That's because I knew too much. He knew that I would not grow up to be a Republican and not be suckered into giving my money away to line their pockets so they could build more stadium-sized super-churches to draw in more money from all the stupid moronic cattle and sheep to make the Republican party rich.

If the book was available in the library, it makes no sense to me why a student shouldn't be allowed to check it out. I'm just curious about that. Whatever the reason given or whatever argument might have ensued, I have to to agree the physical violence was certainly unwarranted.

OK, my 5th grade teacher was really Gung Ho when it came to PE and sports, and he really enjoyed humiliating me in the gymnasium in front of all the other students.

One day, we were playing basketball. I was lousy at sports. I couldn't run because of my crippled up left knee, and I walked with a limp. During the course of the game, the ball slipped out of my hands, and he picked up the ball and punched me in the stomach with it as hard as he could. It really knocked the wind out of me, and I was doubled over in pain, unable to breath. It seemed like an eternity before I was able to start breathing again.

This teacher, the first male teacher I ever had in grade school, he was a real prick! I was singled out by him for harassment.

Then on the day our class went to the library, all the other students were allowed to check out any book they wanted, but I was not. When I saw an Astronomy book that I wanted, he would not allow me to check it out. I asked him why everybody else was allowed to check out the books they likes, but why I wasn't allowed to, we got into an argument over it, and he dragged me out into the hallway, grabbed me by the shoulders, bushed me back against the wall, bashing my head against the corner of the concrete block wall.

I felt dizzy, like I was about to pass out, and I staggered around like a drunk, then the dizziness went away. I can't remember all the details afterward. I remember grabbing him by the shirt, but that's it. Everything else is a blank. Then I remember being in the principles office and sent home for the rest of the day because I was feeling sick. When I came home, my parents had called the school to complained about what had happened.

Now, here's something I had never mentioned before in these forums.

The next day, the teacher didn't say a word to me in the class. One of the other students told me, that when I had grabbed the teacher by the shirt, I pushed up, and lifted him off the floor, and his feet were dangling a few inches above the floor. I don't remember that. I only remember grabbing him by the shirt, then I was in the principles office, and sent home. I don't even remember how I got home. There are some gaps in my memory.

For years after that, I would get these dizzy spells and headaches, and when I shake my head, the dizzy spells would go away. I was 11 years old when this happened. During my teenage years, the dizzy spells would not come as often and the headaches weren't as intense, and by the time I was in my early 20s, I didn't have the dizzy spells and headaches anymore.

Anyway . . . . .

The following year, when I was back in school again, in the 6th grade, the teacher I had for 5th grade was fired, and he was unable to get a teaching job anywhere else after that. But the damage was already done.

I went through some personality changes. I would lose my temper more easily, and when I was angry, I would bite down on the heel part of my hand or on my wrist. I would do this instead of assaulting anybody else, so I took my anger out on myself, inflicting pain on myself instead of hurting another person.

During the summer months I would go to the public library, and there, I could check out all the Astronomy books I wanted. As I have said so many times before, when I was only in the 3rd grade, I was already reading at the adult level, because my mother had taught me to read before I even started going to school.

Well, along with reading books on Astronomy, after reading about Copernicus and Galileo, I started reading books about the Inquisition, the Holy Office, and the History of the Catholic Church even before I was in the 5th grade, and so, I had lost all respect for authority. No, I didn't go around breaking any laws. I didn't steal, I didn't vandalize property or anything. I just didn't have an ounce of respect for authority figures.

I knew some laws are made for a reason, like traffic laws for instance. But after my experience in the 5th grade, and during my teenage years, when adult authority figures tried to place restrictions on what I could read, I flipped them off giving the middle finger salute and I would tell them to fuck off!

I would say something like, "HEY DUMB-ASS! I'M NOT DOING ANYTHING WRONG OR ILLEGAL, SO, BACK OFF, JACK-OFF!" and I would tell then to go get fucked!

When I was in the 7th grade, after some jock was done working me over, the coach finally told him to get off, then it was the coach's turn to jump on me. I kicked and struggled to break away, and took off across the gymnasium, and when he told me to come back, I told him to go straight to fucking hell, because I wasn't going to go back so he could work me over some more.

Yeah, I got a three year suspension from school after that one! But the jock who started the incident was never disciplined for his behavior.

No, I really think some of the teachers were trying to kill me! I really do!

That's because I knew too much, and they probably felt threatened by that.

It's the only explanation I can think of.

Given what I've just read, all I can say is it's no wonder you hate sports and those who promote their "virtues"!

I'm 40 years old now, and it still bugs me about a lot of shit I put up with in school, such as the gym class fiasco, and other things that "jocks" said and did to me. There was this one kid who was on the football team who particularly grated on me -- I had a slight speech impediment in high school, due to some dental problems, so this kid was constantly telling me how I "talked like a dork" and mocking my speech. He and some his buddies would also make fun of my clothes, etc., and since I liked to listen to hard rock music, he said I was a "devil worshipper". But, then, whenever a rock song would become popular, all these guys would go around singing the catchy lyrics and acting like they were fans! Fucking hypocrites!

There was also another kid who was on the baseball team (coached my Mr. Genius Gym Teacher) who would shove me aside in the lunchline, saying "Get out of my way, fag", or some such shit. Yet this guy got honored with a page in the yearbook as "Sportsman of the Year" for the school! The page listed all his accolades and records he had set (none of which were academic, of course), like he was some kind of damn god!

My wife tells me that I should just get over all of this, and that what happened in the past doesn't matter. But, it's hard sometimes, because there's some things that just stick in your mind, no matter how hard you try to get rid of them.

High school sports suck! What's the fucking point in them? I mean, once you're out of school, who gives a shit that you or your team won the "big game", or that you dated the head cheerleader? What do all the "records" mean? Not one goddamn thing. They build character? Teamwork? Teach life lessons? The hell with that -- screw 'em all, I say!

If he does decide to use health care to mandate sports into all areas of our lives, then that is going to clash with his goal to improve the quality of education here in the USA.

Ok... the "mandated sports via health care" thing might be a stretch. But it's something I think should be taken into consideration. Obama is on the record as being an above-average sports fan. And it's possible that some parts of health care reform could be interpreted to increase funding for school sports & fitness programs. (I'm not sure which parts. That's a lot of paperwork to navigate, & health care isn't my field of study. If anybody out there knows about the reforms & would like to join me in a bit of alarmist behavior, I'm sure we could find something )

Regarding the quote, it's of my opinion that every president will say something about education being his top priority. It's a good & decent goal. But no president has ever addressed the impact of spectator sports on our educational system. By his own example, Obama is leading children to hope for a future in sports. We've all seen him play touch football, throw a baseball, shoot baskets, & sit in the stands at sporting events. We know which teams are his favorites. But when was the last time he entered a science fair?

Everybody has a chance to join a sports team at work or in their neighborhood. I've personally never even heard of a company holding science fairs or debates for their employees, even though competitive thinking would benefit the companies infinitely more than competitive ball-chasing does.

here's my "presidential math":

supports education
+supports physical health

= balanced.
This is the standard formula for politicians.

now we add :

+promotes specific sports teams
+takes advantage of many photo ops in sports settings

= things are getting a little "jocky" in here

then we subtract the president's attention to the negative impact sports have on education, since no politician ever brings it up. And we can subtract the funding & promotion of educational opportunities the government provides for adults beyond high school & college, since hardly any exist. What we're left with is a pro-sports society with little time, interest, or funding for education. There are no neighborhood debate teams or science fairs.

It's a matter of proportion, to me. The importance society places on sports grossly outweighs
the importance given to education. To illustrate this, go to your local high school & count the students' T-shirts. Put T-shirts related to math, science, art, literature, history, & technology in one group, & sports shirts in another group. At the end of the day, add them up & see which group's shirts you saw more often. I did this years ago in my own high school, & the ratio was something like 13:1, with sports shirts of course dominating all the other categories combined. If you really want to see some big numbers, don't just use T-shirts. Count shoes, hats, coats, jackets, lanyards, locker posters and key chains, too.
Taking this into consideration, doesn't it seem that a responsible president would make it his personal mission to turn things around, clarify the importance & value differences between education & sports, or at least bring attention to the issue? I'm not saying it's an easy struggle, but it is one worth suffering. Certainly more important than building team spirit for the stupidbowl. Obama is following the path of all the presidents before him: Let 'em watch football, & they won't notice how dumb they're getting or what a bad job I'm doing. I personally choose to point the finger at him because he actively promotes sports culture more frequently than any president in memory.

Mike, I think you've pinpointed my biggest gripe about American culture. Our default leisure activity is to watch sports. At best, you can join a pick-up game at the YMCA. However, if you're looking for something cultural or scientific to do on Saturday nights for entertainment, then you better hope your friends have PhDs or million-dollar net-worth. There are chess clubs, but they are usually the haunt of seedy old men, where I live.

Unlike many Democrats, I am not particularly bothered by the fact that we have both a very poor segment of society and a very rich one, but the lack of interesting diversions for the poor infuriates me.

I don't think that we're likely to see debate teams at major corporations any time soon, unfortunately. For one thing, a free-thinking work-force goes against company interests, since the company usually has a vested interest in supporting either one party or the other. One of the main reasons I don't want to work for the insurance company that is one of the top employers in my area is that I expect the political conversations at the place will be fairly predictable--especially the discussions about health care! I'd wager you won't hear many people supporting the Democratic position, and I highly doubt that those who oppose Obamacare would be as creative in their arguments as you have been in this thread. Basically what I expect to hear are stale arguments that they've "borrowed" from Fox News and talk radio. I can actually think of some interesting arguments of my own against Obamacare, but I'd bet you my co-workers at BIG INSURANCE INC. wouldn't have a whole lot of time to assess and evaluate new angles on the debate. It is so much easier to rehash the old talking points.

Also, both the science fair and the debate team have something else standing in their way at large companies. Large companies tend to be interested, a lot of the time, in building a cooperative spirit among their employees. Sports definitely have that effect. Having everyone build his or her own solar car would highlight divisive differences in talent among employees. It might also have the added drawback of showing that low-ranking employees were frequently as smart or smarter than their supervisors.

I think what ought to happen, is that those of us who find sports dull and tedious should try to build connections with other like-minded individuals. We should organise more social clubs around our non-athletic interests. And you're right, Obama could help by celebrating nerdy, snobby people a little more; and muscle-power a little less.

Maybe ... if we elected a woman in the next election? Would it shift the focus of our admiration away from sports? After all, there is less pressure on women to worship jocks. It would be more socially acceptable for her to ask, for example, whether the Patriots had won the Super Bowl again. (She'd look really ignorant saying that, since the Pats weren't even in it !) Heck, people might even find her less threatening, if she were able to convince men that, though she might be the leader of the free world, there were some areas where she just could not get by without men telling her how things worked. It can't be Palin, though, because we all know Palin's a hockey mom who likes to hunt animals from aeroplanes.

I'm 59 years old, so I was in grade school when John F Kennedy was President.

I remember hearing in one of his speeches on TV, that he talked about setting a goal for the USA to land a man on the moon and return him safely back to earth, a goal that was to be achieved before the end of the decade.

Well, I was certainly in favor of that!

I remember reading my first Astronomy book when I was in the 2ed grade, and than I was hooked, I wanted to read more. I became a virtual book-a-holic. In school, science was my favorite subject, especially Astronomy.

OK, during my first few years in school, I did have some good teachers who encouraged my interest in science. It was after I started the 4th grade, and in the 5th grade when things started going down the crapper for me.

From the 1st grade, to the 3rd grade, things were fine. After I had read almost every grade level book on astronomy from the library, I was only in the 3rd grade when I started reading Astronomy books on the high school level.

OK, you would think, that after President Kennedy's inspirational speech about setting a goal of reaching the moon before the end of the decade, you would think, that would encourage our schools to place a greater emphasis on science and math.

We wanted to beat the Russians to the moon. The Soviet union was ahead of us in the space race, being the first to put a satellite in orbit around the earth with their Sputnik, and being the first to put a man out in space, then they beat us in putting a man in orbit around the earth, and through out the 1960s they kept beating us, being the first to have a man doing the space walk outside of the capsule.

So, naturally, one would think, that children in school who showed and interest in science, would be encouraged to read and study science, and a greater emphasis placed on both science and math.

Aye! But there's the rub!

Then, one fine day, President Kennedy made a comment that Americans were out of shape so through the Presidents Council on Physical Fitness, people were inspired to go on 50 mile hikes.

Yeah! Kennedy just had to shoot off his big mouth about Americans being out of shape and having to go on 50 mile hikes. He just had to shoot off his big mouth about that.

And Oh!!! After that, all the PE coaches thought it was their patriotic duty to whip all the students into shape, and our schools began to place a greater emphasis on PE and sports, and began to neglect teaching of science and math.

Now, I remember how after President Kennedy got assassinated, how everybody all across the USA cried boo hoo! Yeah, I was 12 years old and in the 6th grade at the time, and I also remember feeling sad when Kennedy got shot.

But now, when I think back on it, I was a sap!

Because after Kennedy shot off his big mouth about physical fitness and the 50 mile hikes, that is when the quality of education in our schools went down the crapper!

Now when I think back on it, I truly wish like all Hell, that when President John Fuck-up Kennedy had gotten shot, and had his fucking shit-for-brains blown out, that it had been BEFORE he had a chance to shoot off his fucking big mouth about Americans being out of shape, and about the 50 mile hikes.

OK, so my not being to perform any kind of sports would place me into the category of the hard core uneducated! Eh?

And so, from the 4th grade on, I was beaten, and harassed, and denied a decent education, and could only stand by helpless and watch, as education in Amerika went down the Krapper!

Oh! And it got even better when I was in high school! My science teacher was also the football coach, and he was too fucking busy coaching his team of pre-frontally lobotomized baboons to be teaching in the class room, so he would just set up the movie projector and go out the door, and leave us all sitting in the dark watching stupid cartoons.

And in English literature class, we only played Charades and learned how to fold paper footballs!

Well, since playing the patriotism card seem to work so well, then why not play that card to inspire education? We could say that anybody who can't read and write at the high school and adult level, and can't do math, and doesn't understand science, that anybody who's a fucking retard and refuses to learn anything, is unpatriotic, and should be charged with TREASON.

That would mean that all the trailer trash redneck sports fans in this country would get rounded up, put on trial for TREASON, and then get put up against the stone wall and shot by firing squad!

No blindfold, and no last cigarette!

Oh! But then the Republicans (Retardicans) would lose the Bubbah Vote that they count on so much to win!

In my second post in the topic, I have a lot to say about the 50 Mile Hike Phenomenon that was inspired by President Kennedy, which cause the quality of education in our schools to go down the crapper in the name of physical fitness.

Also I go on to describe, how NASA had this German NAZI rocket scientist by the name of Arthur Rudolph working on the Saturn V rocket booster for the Apollo moon project.

Yeah, back when I was 11 years old and in the 5th grade, I got my head bashed against the brick wall in an argument over an Astronomy book that my teacher would not allow me to check out from the library.

But in the meantime, some low-life scum-bag piece-of-shit NAZI was working in a really fascinating job, designing the Saturn V booster.

But an innocent 11 year old child living up in Minnesota wasn't even allowed to read Astronomy books.

The only reason why we beat the Soviet Union to the moon was because America, and NASA had . . . . .
