Re: Japan earthquake/tsunami

Post by i_like_1981 »

There was a show on last night about the Japan tsunami and earthquake. I watched it all the way through, and some of that footage is going to stick in my mind for the rest of my life. I heard that there is a risk of Tokyo being the next area to be hit by a major earthquake, and as it is the hub of activity in Japan, it would result in even worse loss of life. I sure hope this never happens. The scale of the destruction inflicted upon Japan was truly horrendous, and on last night's show I saw a town which had had 95% of its buildings destroyed. I can't remember the town's name but it had been, as the narrator said, "wiped off the map". I'm glad to hear that your relatives weren't affected by the earthquake in a physical sense, but in an emotional and financial sense this is going to be hard for the whole country to bear.

Regarding your comment about why they are shutting nuclear reactors down in Germany... you may or may not know about the Chernobyl incident in 1986 and how damaging that was to the surrounding area and the environment. The effects persist to this day - the town next to that reactor is not going to be completely safe for the best part of 20,000 years. I suppose this has made every country with nuclear reactors aware of the fact that it is a dangerous source of energy which threatens thousands of lives in the event of any disaster, and it doesn't just have to be an earthquake. Chernobyl had nothing to do with earthquakes or any form of extreme weather, as far as I know. I guess that people have just gone off nuclear power after what's been happening in Japan and wish to turn their energy to less risky and cleaner sources for the future.
