Really Detroitsportsfan, do you think you are going to get anywhere going up against us on our home turf? It's a bit like deciding to plead your case that honey is evil to bees.

If I ever have kids, I will allow them to follow whatever path they wish to take in life, provided it does not involve illegal activity. However, if they ever start referring to a sports star as a "hero" then there's going to be problems. I'll let them participate in gym, but if the teacher tries to force them into an activity they don't want to do, I will be sure to give him or her a piece of my mind. And if they did something as idiotic as making a kid of mine run laps because they are experiencing pain, I will push for their removal from a teaching position.
if said kid refuses to participate, you think he/she should still pass the class?

and your number of 50 percent of people like sports because they're scared is a bit much

Catlover, i like your attitude of wanting to watch a movie instead of sports. My family isnt quite as gun ho as yours, but they DO gather around the tv at Holidays when sports are on. Umm... i always thought holidays were for family time? Problem with the game being on is that is the center of attention. Not "Whats going on in your life"? "How is that feature film coming along"? INstead its "YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"" " Go Manning!" Or whatever that idiots name is. Dont get me wrong, i dont have to be the center of attention, far from it. But, I really think sports are a distraction to family time. And dont get me started on morons who turn on a REd Wing Hockey game at a wedding... thats another rant for a different day.... :)............Its a bit late and im digressing..... Take care.

Ideally if you don't participate in a class you don't pass it, but ideally gym shouldn't be a graded class. Kind of evens things out. Not my number, you have me confused with Fitz.

I can agree with that. As long as you try in gym, you should pass. Not everyone is good at sports and that's understandable.

However, I think fitness is too much ignored in schools. Starting at the elementary level, really. You have gym class what, once a week? Then recess is very short as you get older. Schools don't put emphasis on fitness and health, while they put emphasis on a subject like algebra which 99.9 percent of us won't use when we get out of high school. Some subjects in science also fall under this category.

Nonsense. Algebra is used in MANY jobs. Important jobs, at that. Forensics, engineering, medical coding [which my mother is studying for], and many others have a lot of math and algebra involved. If the schools focused more on P.E. than algebra, you will definitely see a change for the worse.
Also, have you ever heard of excersize equipment?

Fitness and health is more important for a larger percentage of people than algebra. Im not saying algebra isn't used in the real world, but for most people they won't need it.

Yes I have heard of exercise equipment. Naturally, elementary aged kids would rather play than go through any type of exercise routine. Obviously, playing is exercise but there's a reason America is the fattest country, and it starts at a young age. Schools nowadays are swamping kids with homework, not giving a lot of recess time, and not having gym everyday on the elementary level, at least where I went to school. Fitness and health are not nearly enforced as much as they should be.

No, the reason America is the fattest nation on the planet is because, as you said, people aren't getting enough exercise. BUT, it not due to lack of gym in schools or video games or movies.
The biggest offender is SPORTS!
What do I mean by that? What type of "entertainment" is on TV most of the time? Where do most people spend most of their time?

Watching organized sports! Most of which are viewed on TV's in SPORTS BARS where fans chug beer by the gallon to wash down all the wings, fries, burgers and all the other forms of junk food while they live out their fantasies thinking that somehow "their team" knows they're there and they are somehow controlling the outcome.
And then there's people like you who come on here and blame video games and movies or the lack of gym in school for the reason kids are getting fatter.
Never stopping to think that maybe they're following in the sports loving parents footsteps and picking up their parents bad habits while at sporting events. Kids are the product of their environment.

I hate sports with as much passion as most sports fans love sports.

Wasn't the point of my post though.

Congratulations are finding that piece of information on you're own. Now give me a rough estimate of how many of them die-hard sports fan types like yourself. I'm very curious just so you know.

Apparently everybody in the whole world except those who post on this site. At least that's what he seems to think.

Say whatever you want, but the majority of people have at least a passing interest in sports, and that pisses you guys off everyday.

And man, some of you didn't pay attention in english.

no.. most people do NOT like sports. Most people do TOLERATE sports though because they're polite and realize that it means a lot to some people. Like when a little brat shows you a crayon drawing of a firetruck, you say, good job, you're going to be a famous artist one day! Because it's the polite and supportive thing to say. If you're an adult.

In the same way, most people, when confronted by a delirious sports nut, shout back, YAYyy, WE WON YAYYYY!!! --just to make them feel good, to help them feel that the thing they care about is important, when really, it doesn't mean anything to us or most people.

We're just being polite.

Which is ironic, given the manners of a typical sports fan.

I am constantly amazed at how important sports are to some people and how it serves to validate their personality. Or make them a person. Weak-willed people use it as a device to demonstrate that they too are members of society and are part of something important. Just like Detroit Sports Fan helped his team win whatever it is they win. I'm glad Detroit Fan is here so we can study this abherrant behavior first-hand. It is intriguing.

I guess that's why they so fiercely insist that we all like sports too. Because if we don't, there goes there only claim to person-hood! Here, Detroit Sports Fan has no personality (I didn't have to tell you guys that, did I?).

Tell me exactly how you know most people don't like sports? You just say things with no facts or evidence to back it up.

How many sports fans do you really personally know? 2-3, Im guessing? Yet you call them weak-willed, say they have no personality, etc. You are taking this wayy too far. Sports fans have other things to them then just sports. You act as if sports define every sports fan. You have no idea what you're talking about when judging their personality.

It's honestly funny how you can feel this strongly about something so minor, and analyze these people as if you know them. It's quite comical how it bothers you this much that people watch and like sports.
