Re: Favorite link(s) in sportssuck?
finally, a well, thought-out response.
I'd agree to an extent, that some money would be better spent on the needy or things of that nature. However many, many athletes give to charity. Where would these athletes be without those stadiums that taxpayers dollars go to? Also, these worthless stadiums provide jobs, whether it's building them, or having jobs inside them after the stadium is complete during games and everything like that.
Casinos are built to bring money to the city, as well as to give the city a little life, and excitement. You guys don't seem like the fun type, so I don't know how well you would understand that. These casinos also provide jobs for people.
I understand that there's people who have had some bad luck, but a decent part of the needy have drug problems, and have made bad decisions, or things of that nature. Providing these people with jobs I think is a bit more productive than just handing some money to them. That's just me though.
And if you really think you're going to make a difference in anything, then you are truly delusional. Overthrowing something that provides jobs, happiness, and to millions upon millions people the greatest form of entertainment there is, simply isn't a pressing issue or high on anyones priority list.
You talk like you're trying to overthrow a dictator, and it's quite comical.
You had a good response with some good ideas, but it was nothing that wasn't easily arguable.

In my opinion that is true. Depending on how you measure it, I think that you would almost certainly agree.
And even if casinos and stadiums helped cities immensely (which they don't), they don't help as much as a direct infusion of cash into civil projects that directly benefit tax-paying citizens.

you're not overthrowing anything when your group consists of ten people.
LOL at you guys actually thinking you're going to make some kind of difference in this. Sports aren't just going to go away. Never will.

Re: Favorite link(s) in sportssuck?
First, I admit that your participation in this forum has helped us revisit our values and consolidate our purpose but I wish you would stop discouraging the other members of the board. There is nothing that a small group of people cannot accomplish. Look what Jesus did with 10 or 11. At one time he was a lone figure challenging the popular world view and his followers were outcasts... but look at what they eventually accomplished! Whole nations have sworn allegiance to an ideal and pantheons of old gods around the world that previously stood for thousands of years evaporated with barely a whimper. Don't underestimate the power of a motivated group of brothers and sisters. To think "you're not overthrowing anything when your group consists of ten people" is small-minded indeed.
Second, this group has accomplished a lot in the few years we've been together. Everyday more people find this website and the word spreads and more and more people are realizing that it's OK to ignore sports. We regularly receive letters and donations from supporters in over a dozen countries on three continents and encouragement from even more. Everyday, after finding this site, one more person realizes he is not alone in what is considered by his peers to be odd-ball behavior. Everyday, one more person finds the courage to stand up against the crowd and say, I don't like sports and I don't watch them! Everyday, others witness displays of courage like this and realize that they too don't really care for sports but were too timid to go against the crowd before. But no more! The effect multiplies exponentially and echos across the world via the internet and soon, professional sports will experience a revolutionary loss of interest. Public interest and by extension, public financial support, will wane. Cities, already strapped for cash, will identify sports as the most appropriate place to start cutting spending. (Contrary to what you say, stadiums are usually money losers and require constant tax support.) Stadiums will fall into disuse and after some period of decay, will be torn down. Cable TV providers, looking for a way to remain competitive and offer lower prices, will cut sports channels from the free line up and make sports fans pay to support ESPN. The sports channels will quickly collapse under the realization that hardly anyone is willing to PAY to watch sports. Books will be written by high-profile authors on how we were bamboozled by the media and the lessons we learned. We will learn from our mistakes like post-revolution China. Yes, Detroit, you'd better start changing your world view because changes are coming.

Re: Favorite link(s) in sportssuck?
I love your enthusiasm dude, I really do. It's good to stand up for something you believe in.
However, what you're fighting simply is not that big of a deal, and most people are going to laugh at you and no one will take you seriously. Do you think even most non sports fans are going to fight for this? Sports are not viewed as a problem by anyone, and you're underestimating how etched in American(and World) culture sports are.
You guys are talking like you are trying to overthrow a fucking dictatorship, you are talking about something that is done for entertainment purposes, and that makes millions upon millions of people every single day. You guys can avoid sports, or choose to ignore them. It's not that hard. Why try and "revolt" against something that you can easily avoid, except for maybe hearing about it passing through one day? Because it's so horrible that the guy at work couldn't believe you didn't like sports? Some of you guys sound a little bit whiny on this whole subject.
Again, you have a lot of optimism. That's good. Hopefully, for your sake, that extends into other areas of your life. However, in this case, it's blind optimism. Maybe you guys attracted some people, changed a few minds. But you have to know deep down that sports are far, far too popular to lose that big of an interest. The bottom line is, as long as people are playing sports, they're going to enjoy watching them as well. And trust me, with youth involvement in sports up across the board, little boys aren't going to stop playing and loving sports anytime soon. I think that's the part you underestimate. Little kids. They play sports, they want to see their role models on TV playing the same thing they play, and then they grow up to be sports fans. That's a cycle that I'm afraid for you guys, is never going to stop. Thus, the pro sports teams exist, and college football and basketball are huge, huge things. The economy, although terrible right now, will eventually get better. Look how bad it is right now. Even with it being how bad it is, you don't hear anyone talking about cutting sports teams. It's just not going to happen man.
Sports are right up there with music/movies as the most popular forms of entertaintment. Baseball is has been etched into American culture for over a 100 hundred years now. Football and basketball slowly made their way into being as popular as they are today. Hockey, while not as popular as the other three, is still very very popular in the US.
I started a thread on this, and it got no answers. Please tell me what doing away with sports would bring?
and please, stop acting like you guys are some displaying courage by doing this. You talk about how athletes don't deserve to get words thrown around like that about them, don't say it about yourself when you're "hiding" behind a keyboard. Kind of hypocritical I'd say.
Please answer this question, along with the one just above this. Why do you want sports to no longer exist? They make millions and millions of good people(regardless of what you say)happy every single day. You want to take that away, just because you don't like hearing about them from time to time? Because you don't like seeing them in the paper? Because you don't like the 2-3 minutes they get on the news? Sounds pretty whiny and selfish to me.
Also, overall, I would say sports teams bring money to a city. If cities lost that much money because of sports teams, there's no way they would exist. And if they lost that much money, I'm sure there would be a much bigger uproar from the non sports fans about it.

No, you don't you're just saying that. But we're still standing strong.I love your enthusiasm dude, I really do. It's good to stand up for something you believe in.
I already commented on that I don't need to repeat myself. You guys are talking like you are trying to overthrow a fucking dictatorship
I'm pretty sure my vision is better than yours.Again, you have a lot of optimism. That's good. Hopefully, for your sake, that extends into other areas of your life. Okay let's see hmmm....what if jock A became a glaciologist(person who studies glaciers) and found a way to make the glacier melt slower. What if jock B became a cancer doctor and found a new treatment to help millions of people. What if jock C learned how to make an alternative fuel source from plants or fungi. Those are just examples but why get rid of sports? Because all that energy, manpower, money and time is wasted on simple extracurricular activites and I'm talking mostly about professional sports. Imagine what would happen if all those things went to other activities like hospitals, law enforcement, fire departments, education, etc. Why aren't we spending more money on Nasa or non-profit organization for those with illnesses. You can actually make a REAL impact on people lives instead of that moment of bliss you get from watching a team win a game(wow like that NEVER happpens). Imagine refocusing all those things to help people instead of entertain them. Just imagine how much good you could do, stop thinking within the box. All those millions of kids in Africa dying from H.I.V., diarrhea, pneumonia, do they care about sports? No , because they're too hungry and cold to care. And to respond to you're last comment aren't you hiding as well? Please tell me what doing away with sports would bring?
and please, stop acting like you guys are some displaying courage by doing this. You talk about how athletes don't deserve to get words thrown around like that about them, don't say it about yourself when you're "hiding" behind a keyboard. Kind of hypocritical I'd say.
Hahahahaha! Instant gratification huh? I'm sure the millions of little kids will learn alot from that! Haven't you heard of patience is a virtue? They make millions and millions of good people(regardless of what you say)happy every single day.
Okay, there's no denying that fact but I wonder what are they actually DO with that money? Spend it on more sports-related activities! Wow! They sure is a good way to improve the community to strength something that ALREADY prosperous. Are you implying that if things like the stadiums shut down the rest of the economy of the city would fall? I HIGHLY doubt that. If some of cities survived through hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and even a civil war they can definitely handle a stadium. You know thanks for the chat, I think you helped us like sports even less. I feel like a better non-sports fan now. Now I think it's about time we started asking some questions. 1. Did you read my link yet?(last time I ask) 2. How did it make you feel? 3. Know any good anti-sports links? =)Also, overall, I would say sports teams bring money to a city. If cities lost that much money because of sports teams, there's no way they would exist. I suppose we just take everyones job that you deem not useful and make them doctors and such?
People need entertainmentin their life. A time to get away from all these things you went all of the time dedicated to. You'd have a lot of depressed people in the world.

With that logic there must be a lot of bored and/or depressed sports-haters around, since apparently sports are the only distraction/form of entertainment in the world.

Yes, it really is JUST A GAME.

It seems that someone hasn't heard of VIDEO GAMES or BOOKS. There are tons of things to do other than sports! Though now I got that thought, I wonder....
