Re: Non-ignorant athlete/sports fan here- please read
SportsGuy92,
I'm sorry, you seem like a nice fellow, but I am completely unmoved by your last post. Time or no time on the internet, you addressed really nothing that I had to say, just commented here and there on various little points, completely avoiding the bigger ones, especially the one where I encouraged you to try and address the issue with your peers.
I said it in my original post, I'm going to say it again, so we are talking in circles at this point. Sports are full of people who like to proselytize. I've never seen someone that likes building model cars shove his hobby down the throat of another human being, then hate that other human being for not conforming to his requirements of the non-model car builder's behavior.
No, actually you find this sort of behavior not in other hobbies, but in two realms: sports and extremist cult like religions.
I don't know how many times I'm going to have to say to you that the vast vocal majority of true sports fans treat their calling like a religion, including the wacky 'spread the word' part of it.
Given you went to a private school, I can definitely see how your perception of what I'm talking about is very narrow. So maybe you won't ever understand where anyone here is coming from. Then again, if you actually wanted to put a little effort into putting on someone else's shoes, you might, but I think it would be an overestimation to guess you'de make that sort of effort. And please don't bring your one family member's dislike of sports into the fray again, that's nowhere near a good example of what we're talking about here.

SportsGuy92 and Polite24, please check the Guestbook for Skinny Joe's comment (which he went to the trouble of typing 14 times), which may be read below my response. This kind of negative attitude is what we have come to expect from some, if not many, sports fans. Note the comment he makes about having "superior" children, which indicates a slight tendency towards cruelty. You object to comments that some of us make about sports and athletes, and I agree with you many times. But I also find comments made by "Skinny Joe" to be quite objectionable.

Even though I'm a member of a health club, I certainly don't care if you don't exercise. That's your own business. Just so you don't misunderstand.

Of course, I also don't agree with the Guestbook comment that "ALL PEOPLE WHO TAKE PART IN THE SPORTS SHOULD BE PUT AGAINST A WALL AND SHOT AND KILLED" (needless to say).Earl wrote:SportsGuy92 and Polite24, please check the Guestbook for Skinny Joe's comment (which he went to the trouble of typing 14 times), which may be read below my response. Sports jocks get FREE things and money. I deserve a cake, a house, a country, and $200,000. Jocks can't complain then.

If SportsGuy92 wants to hang round here and make himself known, I say let him. I personally gladly welcome anyone on this board who a) is not a spammer (bastards!) and b) can be civilised and tolerant towards the other members. He fits the bill so let's not criticise him all the time. After all, another arrogant prick like Samdaman could return at any time!

First I'd like everybody to know that I'm going to be gone until Saturday, but should be able to get back on here by then.
So much for finding "this sort of behavior" only in "sports and extremist cult like religions".
You get your greatest thrills and pleasures from studying science and technology. There's nothing wrong with that. A lot of the people you meet probably label you as a geek. I won't. In fact, I praise you for this, as people who enjoy intellectual pursuits are usually the ones who contribute the most to society. But you need to remember that most people are not like you, and do things where using the brain isn't necessarily the most important when it's time for them to entertain themselves. Who are you to judge another person for watching sports as a break from their everyday lives? If you do, that is snobbery.greencom wrote:Yeah Sportsguy, I do deny sports is mentally challenging. I'm also into physical fitness, I'm soon to be 58 years old and can keep up with a lot of thirty somethings I know. I do have some physical handicaps but I keep close tabs on my conditioning and I have greatly benefited from it. Being six foot four and 205 pounds I've even played a few informal games of basketball with some friends last year and it was fun but hardly mentally challenging, physically challenging yes but any athletic person with an IQ above a lower primate can play it to a decent degree, just listen to a typical player being interviewed, you almost need subtitles. This, in my opinion goes for any organized team sport, it takes even less of a brain to sit and watch this juvenile activity and to actually think it has worth. Yeah I had fun playing Bball but I was a bit drunk and felt like engaging in some mindless activity, it amazes me that people watch this crap and pay millions of bucks to the knuckle dragging players. I get much more pleasure out of studying science and technology. The thrill of finally grasping and understanding a difficult new concept of science or secret of nature is a rush that sports can never deliver to any thinking person, but I guess rabid sports fans don't think much. This nation worships sports and makes heros out of athletes and society will pay an awful price for doing so. I hope I've offended someone who deserves it.
Love and Peace,
