Like 1981 said, that feeling of dominance leads to the abuse, which can be psychological or physical, of people who don't succeed at sports.

And I disagree that it can never be matched. For I feel the best way to feel superior to someone is to succeed at life more than they have. That'll be quite easy for me to beat the people who bullied me at life who were good at sports while I weren't, for most (I think the term "most" is a bit generous, it'd be closer to "all") of them weren't the brightest students, and most of them had ADHD. I can see the day where if my career goes as planned, I'll be an architect making a good living, and maybe one day I'll bump into one of the people who bullied me in school on the streets. Maybe he'll be laying down on a makeshift bed with an upside down hat filled with a couple dimes and nickels. And maybe I'll be a nice guy and toss him a quarter. While laughing at his inferiority. Then I'll continue on my way to wherever I'm headed with a smile on my face knowing that I beat him at life. You can hardly say the feeling of beating someone at a sport can't be matched.

I agree with the statements made between this post and my previous one. I probably should have used a better word than "never," I'm sure there are a lot of things you can do that will give you a similar feeling. If you ask professional athletes what they think it will take to beat a team, a lot of the time they'll say something like "It's not just believing that we're better than them, it's knowing that we're better, and having that confidence." I guess that was the point I was trying to prove with that comment.

Sadly that's another one of the sports attitudes that I feel encourages bullying. The fact that some players (not all) will take that philosophy off the football field: "Knowing we're better than them". That smug feeling of overconfidence and competitiveness only fuels their constant need to be better than others and this will encourage bullying. It would be fine if the football players could retain this attitude during the game and nowhere else, but sadly, for some of them, life is just one big game: always trying to be the best and using brute force to achieve that goal.

I like that attitude. It's inspirational to me, knowing that someone wants to succeed that badly. I like to carry it with me. However, I do not applaud it off the field/court. I think bullying is a personal choice, not a mental disorder that forces people to believe that they need to be more dominant than others. Some people are just jerks. For me, I've learned that the best way to avoid being bullied is to not be an introvert, but at the same time, not a massive faggot.

This topic has been getting way off the original subject.

I suggest that some of you newcomers to these forums would please go back to the first page and read about how a school was using school-issued lap-top computers with Web Cams to spy on their students.

Thank you.

Well, yes, obviously it's a personal choice and there is absolutely no factor that would FORCE a person to bully others against their own will. But it's just my feeling that forceful, brutal attitudes and characteristics acquired by participating in rough contact sports like American football or rugby will sometimes affect people's conduct towards others. Often the people that feel that constant need to prove their toughness and dominance over others are jerks. They are paranoid about their masculinity and think that being nice and friendly to everyone will not compliment it. These so-called "tough guys" who have to go round harassing others to prove their "masculinity" are just complete morons.

Not outwardly showing introverted tendencies will prevent bullying, yes. Don't give the bullies easy prey. Sadly this is not something I took to heart back in my high school years.

"Don't be a massive faggot?" Hmm... what next? Tell the bully to light up a J and relax, perhaps?

Hmm... I've been bullied quite a lot. However I'm certainly not a homosexual, and I'm not massive.

Hm. I never get picked on in my school, yet I see other people being picked on all the time. I'm not friends with them either because I'm not the kind of person that would pick on someone in school. I don't know.

Well, I remember when I was a teenager, I would bring a radio into the bathroom and listen to rock music while taking a shower, so I don't think it's so unusual to bring in a laptop and set in on the counter to listen to music while showering.

But I didn't have to worry that my radio was spying on me, unlike a laptop with a webcam.

Water and electricity most certainly don't contribute to good human health!

1) I'm used to small bathrooms so a few meters isn't a possibility, maybe 2.5 meters. So the only places to put it farthest away would be on the floor or on the sink which is also a source of water.
2) The shower head I use usually releases the water very hard and fast, loud enough that I have I would have difficulty hearing things so something like enjoying music from a laptop or radio would be more of chore than a pleasure. Of course getting different shower head would solve the problem. XD
