Brigan, we (well, at least I) still want to know where that message about the El Paso library came from.

Fit Man, I hope you can see what is wrong with the sports culture that many people on this site criticize when you see the case of the cheerleader who refused to cheer for her rapist. How can a girl possibly be expected to do that? Is it really that important to have someone cheer for an athlete that they are willing to completely destroy the dignity of a human being for that purpose? Apparently so. There's so many things that are horribly wrong in that case, and it really isn't difficult to argue that many of those problems are a result of the sports culture. If the school administrators didn't think that athlete should be invulnerable to criticism (despite the fact that he's a rapist), the cheerleader wouldn't be forced to cheer for him or leave the team.

Yeah, and to make matters worse, she has to pay $45,000 dollars in court costs, so her life is pretty much fuck up. She was probably a good student, with high grades and was probably looking forward to going to college after graduating high school. I'm merely speculating, of course.

But now, she probably can't get a loan to cover the cost of going to a university, because she has this major debt to pay off so her life is pretty much put on hold.

No, this goes way beyond mere bullying and name calling. Getting raped is a very traumatic event. I should know, because when I was 17 years old, I was beaten and raped by an older man. I became withdrawn, I didn't want to leave my room, I didn't feel like going out. I didn't know how to deal with it. This was back in 1969, back when nobody believed that a guy could get raped.

Now we know better. But back than, I could not get the psychological counseling that I needed. The shrinks just prescribed tranquilizers and sent me home, so I had to live with the memories and the nightmares. I was emotionally and mentally fucked up in the head, and that is why when I turned 18 my parents filed a disability claim on my behalf and why I started receiving SSI. I don't see what you're getting at, but if you're saying sports culture isn't a part of sports because sports can exist without it, I'm not sure I follow. That's like saying rock music isn't part of music because music would still exist without rock. And actually, it still is sports culture, just because it exists elsewhere doesn't mean it isn't because of sports culture in some cases, as it would be less of a problem if the sports culture was different.

It isn't just what the person learns in an intellectual way, though.

When someone plays a sport like American football, it conditions violence and aggression into the person.

That violence can spill over into everyday life.
