In the cacophony of insults and name-calling that has ensued since Fit Man started posting in this forum, an interesting fact seems to have been overlooked; and that is, he's in agreement with us on a number of issues, which means that he is a far cry from the likes of Samdaman .
1) He does recognize that the sports culture has some problems.
2) He does not believe that sports build moral character and therefore admits that some school athletes are jerks (a fact that, incidentally, the sports media is inclined to ignore). By the way, I do believe that the right sort of coaching (of the sort advocated by Joe Ehrmann and others) does build character and that many coaches fail in that regard.
3) He is against bullying by individual athletes or anyone else.
4) He is against mandatory P.E. He recognizes that forcing nonathletic kids to participate in sports is counterproductive, if not cruel. (Of course, I do recognize that it is cruel.)

This is the sort of talk one would expect to find among ill-mannered kids in elementary school. Unless I'm mistaken, I understand you'll turn 60 in September. This sort of talk is undignified for middle-aged men. You should act your age.

Your attitude of "tit for tat" is wrong; it's uncivilized. Did you know that maintaining a victim mentality can be quite destructive? During the civil war in the former Yugoslavia, Elie Wiesel met with Serb leaders in Belgrade, appealing to them to stop committing atrocities against the Croats and the Bosnian Muslims. Serbs took him to a holocaust museum of their own, which documented atrocities that were committed against the Serbs during World War II by the Croatian fascists. They told Wiesel that it was now their turn, that they were entitled to "get back" at the Croats and Bosnian Muslims for what had happened half a century before.

You must discard the victim mentality if you are ever to overcome your mental illness. That means you must find a way to look beyond yourself. Perhaps finding a way to do some sort of charitable work would be helpful.

Fit Man, you regretfully got off to a bad start in your very first post. You personally attacked Fat Man without knowing all the facts, yet you have not apologized at least for not knowing that he was maimed at the age of 4. You still don't know all the facts about him. I think I've made it quite clear that I disagree with Fat Man's bad attitudes, but he suffered more abuse growing up than I did. I don't know how I would have turned out.

This forum is not my personal property. I didn't create this website. You and Fat Man have the same freedom of speech. As a moderator I'm only bound by the Forum Rules.

As far as the hateful comments are concerned, I strongly believe that people should be treated with respect. There is a Montana State football player named Andy Austin who once posted in this forum for a while. He was treated shamefully by some of the members. I strenuously objected at the time. Everyone has feelings and deserves to be treated with some respect. At least as much as possible.

On the other hand, sports are not threatened in any way in our society. Athletes in the most popular sports are not exactly a minority group in the same sense as blacks, Jews, and other such categories of people. To the contrary, growing up in a sports-saturated culture is frequently not easy for nonathletic boys, who sometimes are bullied simply for having no interest in sports. If a nonathletic teenage boy is bullied at his junior high or high school by several athletes, does anyone stick up for him? I dare say that many times the answer is "No." That certainly was true at Columbine before the 1999 massacre and, I dare say, is still true at many (if not most) high schools today. If a high-school girl or a university or college coed is sexually assaulted by a popular athlete, what support can she expect to receive? Do you honestly believe the scales of justice are balanced in such cases, or is it not true that the decks are stacked heavily in the athlete's favor?

I'd like you to honestly answer the following question, which I don't think you need to answer in this forum. For about a year or so before he was finally banned in 2007, there was a high-school football player who posted under the username of Samdaman and let the members know just how much he hated "nerds." In a message posted in the Guestbook, he said he had beaten up nerds at his school. So, this is my question for you, which you don't need to answer in this forum (if you so choose): Would you have called Samdaman "a disgrace to humanity," or would your response have been muted? I prefer to believe you would have reacted in the same way as you have towards Fat Man.

You see, Fat Man and Samdaman are mirror images of each other. Fat Man hates "jocks" and most sports fans; Samdaman hates "nerds." However, I must say that the Samdamans of this world seem to have a lot more power than the Fat Mans, which is not to say that I condone anyone's bad attitudes. Fat Man is capable of being rude to people (as, indeed, he has been at times) while Samdaman can beat guys up.

I could be way off base here, Fit Man; but I sense there might be an external source of anger that has been a factor in your exchanges with Fat Man. You seem to be more angry than you should be, at least in my opinion.

I keep asking myself, if I ware a 5th grade teacher, and I had this one particular student in my class who's reading level was at the high school or adult level, what would I do to encourage him?

If I were a fifth grade teacher who had this one particular student with his advanced reading level, I would encourage him, instead of putting him down.

If I were a teacher, I would never do to any kid, what had been done to me.

I know someone will be likely to jump to conclusions when I post this and try to make it seem like I have opinions that I don't actually have, but whatever, I'll say it anyway. Let's say, hypothetically, that a person was tormented in school by a racial group because they were white, involving a lot of physical harm, and they later went on this Stormfront website discussing their hatred of that racial group, however they never did any harm to that racial group, or anyone for that matter, and their hatred only showed on the website. I would not consider this person a disgrace to humanity. Again, I know someone is going to assume I'm a racist because I said that, which is completely untrue, but let me say that this does not at all mean that I agree with this person's views. If I were to see what this person said about the racial group, I would be irritated by their opinions, however knowing where they came from, even if I wouldn't see their viewpoint as understandable, I wouldn't consider them a disgrace to humanity. I've disagreed with Fat Man on this forum numerous times, often in the defence of athletes on this forum, but I never would consider him a disgrace to humanity.

Earl is definitely not the only civil person on this forum. There are, and at least have been, several members who were quite reasonable on this forum. Also, you are definitely not without your flaws. You assumed several things about me earlier which were extremely false, I wouldn't consider you a civil member of this forum. I may have called you an asshole a few times, but I haven't done any more to you than what you have done on this forum either. When you first posted on this site, you said several things about Fat Man which only an asshole would say. Sure, you can say that you only did that to show Fat Man what his posts are like, however I could just as easily say that I only ever insulted you because you insulted Fat Man.

I know I'm going to sound like a big "fem" (but, hey, I still pump iron; so, I'm kinda macho ); but this exchange between Fat Man and Fit Man has reduced me to tears. (I'm not kidding.) I sense a lot of anger and hurt on the part of both you guys. Believe me, I'm not meaning to put either of you down whenever I make critical comments. (Fat Man, if I didn't love you as a friend, I wouldn't say a word.)

I may sound wishy-washy; but I understand Fat Man's point of view, and I understand Fit Man's point of view. Fat Man, if I had been your father, I would have given my right arm to get you to a better school; and I would have raised Cain about the teachers who mistreated you. Most of your misfortune stemmed from the fact that your homelife wasn't what it should have been; and that's a gross understatement, to be sure. (Forgive me.) Believe me, I understand your anger and rage over the injustices you suffered.

Fit Man, I certainly understand your point of view about hating any category of people. My parents taught me not to hate by their very example, even though they weren't members of my church today. I grew up under Jim Crow and witnessed mindless hatred directed against people simply because they were black. When Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in 1968 during the spring of my junior year in high school, I never saw so much glee in my life. I remember how sickened I was, even though I wasn't aware of the tragic history of race relations. Incidentally, when I was in high school, I thought all the football players (at least those who had heard of me) thought I was a wimp because I wasn't interested in sports. I never thought any of them would ever want to be a friend to me; yet today one of my best friends in real life is a former high-school football player (from another high school in another state) and a member of my congregation (one of our deacons). When I was in high school and throughout my twenties, I never thought any former player would appreciate me as a friend; but I was wrong.

I understand the anger both of you feel. Writing posts in a forum definitely has problems. Your inhibitions are lowered, and your differences are magnified. I've been quite angry online more than once. For example (and, yes, I know I've said this before), I started posting at http://able2know.org for the first time in the spring of 2009 in response to a topic one of their members had started about this website. Two of the other members (sports fans) were insulting the A2K member who had written the OP in support of this website in rather demeaning ways. They sounded just like bullies; so, when I started posting, I went in with all guns a-blazin' with a few cannons besides. I ended up apologizing to one of them for calling him "that jerk coach." Then months later in the same thread, the other one of the two insulting members touched off another flame war when he personally attacked i_like_1981, a formerly active member of this website who had also joined A2K after I did. I reacted hysterically and went on at length until I just got tired of it and apologized to that member in a PM. I'm not able to go back to that A2K thread and read the posts I submitted in those exchanges because there's just too much anger and hurt in them. The point is that it's easy to lose your temper online.

I feel distressed for both of you, Fat Man and Fit Man, because the anger doesn't go anywhere and leaves you feeling empty (if not also resentful of the other member for a long time). (At least that's how I ended up at A2K. I actually had to reinvent my online personality at that website.) I'm sorry this flaming war has been so personal. I like both of you guys, and I'm sorry you've had to go through this. Believe me, I can empathize with both of you. If we were now sitting in the same room, I'd jam peace pipes into your mouths; but I actually wouldn't because I don't want either of you smoking pot.

Yeah, what kind of schools one attends and the quality of education, it's pretty much a crap shoot.

A lot depend on where you live. Some states probably do have better schools.

I gave up trying to discuss anything with Fat Man, no offense intended, but it's like talking to a brick wall. he only pinpoints some parts of the posts he needs to start talking about how religion is bad or how crap his life was, I know those problems existed and may exist even today, but many of those incidents like a teacher hitting a kid may still happen today but with little chance, and also, when it happened before reports should of have been made, a little visit to a doctor to see the injury caused could of have led to questions, and after a proper acussation was made, that teacher would have gotten his so deserved jail sentence. He never truly reads all the information I or any new member posts "unless he's brought his attention that he doesn't", just like it may happen with this post.
