the more things change......

My nephew is in 3rd grade came home to his mom upset tuesday. At school they were having a few field days at the end of the school year. They asked the kids which ones wanted to play in a baseball tournament. My nephew raised his hand along with most of the other kids. So they took down the names of all the kids who wanted to play, and put them in a hat and drew names. My nephew was not picked. So the brilliant p.e. coach made all the kids who were not selected, sit on the bench for the whole game and cheer for the kids who were playing. Then at the end of the game, the coach got mad at the kids on the bench and told them they were all losing five points from their grade because they did not cheer enough! Now the real kicker, the teacher let the kids who were on the team, pick who was going to play the next game on the next day. My nephew was not chosen again! Now mind you he doesn't play any after school sports, but PE is/was his favorite class. He is not anti-social and gets along well with the other students. Needless to say, he was pretty upset when he got home.
My sister called the coach and chewed on her about not rotating the kids so they wouldn't have to sit on the bench again. The coach said she thought that the kids that didn't get to play the first day were playing the next time (yeah right). At the time my sister talked to the coach, she did not know that the kids were docked for not cheering enough. I'm sure the coach would deny that too.
So fast forward to Wednesday. Apparently all the kids got to play in the next tournament. Though, my nephew, being pretty smart, thought the kids that had already played, and the coach, should have had to set on the bench and cheer that day.
This shit never changes, does it?

Thanks for your post, rotten.
I will admit at the onset that I know nothing about how a baseball tournament is conducted; but I don't see why those boys who were not selected to play should have been required to attend the game, when all they did was sit on the bench and cheer. I assume they were suited up, even though they weren't playing. I may be missing something here, but what's the point of this? I'm amazed that the coach penalized the kids who sat on the bench with a five-point loss from their grades just because they supposedly did not cheer enough. This is utter nonsense. The first group of players were selected by having their names drawn from a hat, yet the second group of players were selected in an entirely different way. What message are the kids given when the rules are not followed consistently? I'm amazed at the lack of common sense and good judgment that some P.E. coaches seem to have. Just to cite a single example from my own experience when I was a kid, my 6th-grade P.E. coach once had us participate in wrestling matches. First of all, I had never been taught anything about wrestling. Even though I was weak and had a slight build, he matched me up with a husky classmate who would end up playing football at my high school. Talk about a mismatch. That must have been the shortest wrestling match in history. I have no idea why the coach didn't match me with a classmate who was more of an even match. I recently read a blog in which P.E. coaches were posting comments about changes in P.E. programs. Many of these coaches apparently believed that their only purpose was to teach competitiveness. Is there even a need to teach competitiveness to school children? How about encouraging nonathletic kids to become involved in an exercise program for the sake of their physical health in a constructive way, instead of subjecting them to humiliating treatment? I'm firmly convinced that more bullying goes on in most P.E. classes than in any other class. Leave it to some coaches to suck all the fun out of sports and in the process teach nonathletic kids to hate sports and fear athlete classmates. There is a movement to reform school P.E. so that physical fitness is actually promoted instead of just sports, but its proponents have their work cut out for them.

Good grief. The level of activity in this forum has been so low lately that it scares me. Do we need another samdaman to stir things up? Captain America ("You people disgust me"), where are you when we need you? We could use some abuse now.

Nah, sorry, I can't do this. You'll need to get more activity some other way.
Punished for not cheering enough? I'm trying to think of something to say here, but I think I'm speechless.

Yeah, that's the way most of those guys talk. Aint it the truth?
Don't worry, abitagirl. I'm still on your side. Guess I'm just a little depressed. Most of these guys seem to have a hit-and-run approach. They don't stick around to talk. And if they do stick around, they don't want to engage in a dialogue so that we might understand each other. They just engage in insults. By the way, with regard to the "all sportz h8ters r FAGZZZZ" line, don't these guys know that there have been homosexuals who played football?

Apparently it doesn't. When I was a kid I thought teachers and coaches were smart and almost infallible but now, as an adult, I can see that many of them are prejudiced jerks who can't make it in the real world and take out their frustration on the kids left in their charge.
Parents and grandparents should be allowed to volunteer and monitor these situations to make sure these inept staffers do their jobs fairly. Going to school is tough enough as it is without the people we've entrusted with our kids making it worse.
