Good afternoon Craig Storm!

Oh, so nice of you to join us in these forum discussions!

Allow me to be the first to welcome you to our domain, and allow me to introduce myself.

I'm Fat Man. I'm known as "The Judge" here on these forums.

Now, we have a little matter that we seriously need to discuss.

You said in one of your letters to our web site, the following . . . . .
"You say our schools should be sanctuaries of learning and education. Learning and education is the opiate of the masses.
Oh! Really now!!!

Am I correct in assuming that you went to school where you were taught how to read and write?

Else, how are you able to put up your own web site?

I also assume that you use a computer.

Now then, where does the technology to make a computer come from?

In fact, where dose the technology to make all the wonderful toys we have today, our big flat-screens TVs with liquid crystal display LCD, and cell phones, and millions of other wondrous toys we all enjoy so much, where does it all come from?

Medical science, where does it come from?

How do we launch satellites into orbit, or put a man on the moon, or send a space probe like Voyager to the outer planets of our Solar System?

Oh, please! Do tell, pray tell.

Well, I have some bad news for you little boy.

There is no Santa Clause, there is no Easter Bunny, and there is no Tooth Fairy.

Santa Clause did not bring us all of these ultra-modern technological wonders.

No, it comes from people who studied science and math in school, people who got an education.

That, which you call opium, I call heap big powerful medicine.

Education is NOT an opiate, but rather, a strong stimulant that awakens the mind, makes us more aware of the universe around us, and makes us able to create all these technological wonders.

I AM FAT MAN!

I am da bomb!!!

But you, Little Boy . . . . .

You're just a dud!!!

Fat Man, you may be wrong about Craig. I think he might have been speaking facetiously.

What would you suggest is a better suited subject of that quote (below)?

"You say our schools should be sanctuaries of learning and education. Learning and education is the opiate of the masses."

If education's so great, that is.

And I may be a dud, but only sexually (thank you 'roids!).

Well, education isn't so great now, especially now that in some schools they fire several math teachers and science teachers just so they can hire a couple of athletic coaches.

And, I'm not a roid, because I don't mess with steroids!

Oh! So you admit that you can't get it up? Eh?

Can't make it in the sack, Jack? Eh?

You're more pathetic than I thought!

BUAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!

I'm outta here!

Don't get so personal with him, Fat Man. You should have asked him exactly what he meant. What he said about education doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but he should be encouraged to explain why he believes this. I'm still not convinced that he's not being facetious.

Yeah, I do wish that he would clarify his position.

There are still some teachers, not very many right now, but some teachers who actually encourage their students to think for themselves and draw their own conclusions. So, in a situation, where you have teachers who encourage academic and intellectual freedom, then education would NOT be the opiate of the masses.

Unfortunately, in the schools I went to, this was not so.

In my school, my teachers were the biggest mind opium dealers around, trying their best to brainwash us with their own brand of mind-soap.

When a school district fires math and science teachers to replace them with athletic coaches, than it's no wonder our educational system is going down the crapper.

As I had mentioned before, in another topic, I had a science teacher who was also the school's football coach, and during football season, he was to fucking busy, coaching his team of drooling moronic pre-frontally lobotomized baboons to be teaching in the classroom.

Instead, he would set up a film projector, then turn off the lights and go out the door, leaving us to sit in the dark watching a bunch of stupid cartoons.

I wanted to learn science, not watch stupid cartoons!

So, I will concede that today's sports oriented schools are the opiate of the masses.

But NOT education in and of itself, if it is being done by good and competent teachers.

Sports is the Cocaine, the LSD and the PCP or the masses because sports inspires violence.

Now, back to Craig Storm again . . .

Yeah, I heard that steroids dose render one a sexual dud.

Oh, yes indeed! Thanks to steroids, you may be able to life more than 350 pounds over your head, but you'll lose the ability to get your shrunken Wee Willy to ever stand up again.

But that's actually good!!!

It means that another drooling moron has taken himself out of the gene pool so as not to reproduce any more drooling morons.

Have you ever heard of The Darwin Award?

It is usually awarded posthumously to the moron who has killed himself through his own stupidity, thus doing the gene pool a favor.

But on the other hand, if one is stupid enough to do something that renders him unable to reproduce, like, for example: accidentally shooting his nuts off but still surviving, then the idiot who has rendered himself incapable of reproducing may still receive The Darwin Award while still alive.

So, allow me to bestow upon you, THE DARWIN AWARD!!!

Image

And so . . . . .

It gives me great pleasure to bestow upon thee

THE DARWIN AWARD

unto a drooling moron while he's still alive.

Here is a smaller version of The Darwin Award.

Image

Wear this as a badge upon your coat lapel.

And wear it with pride!!!

Yeah! You did good!

BUAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Gee! I'm a fat bitch!!!

That answers my question. But the reason you give seems inadequate (much like my 'roids singed johnson). An opiate is a drug, yes, like Cocaine, LSD and PCP. But I think the point of the (modified) quote I used was to illustrate that the subject, in your opinion sports, is a false, vacant fantasy. Below is the real, unmodified quote with its original subject.

Religious distress is at the same time the expression of real distress and the protest against real distress. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, just as it is the spirit of a spiritless situation. It is the opium of the people. The abolition of religion as the illusory happiness of the people is required for their real happiness. The demand to give up the illusion about its condition is the demand to give up a condition which needs illusions.

Educational system is going down the crapper? Since when? More people today are educated than ever before.

Well . . .there are more people going to school today than ever before, I'll grant you that.

But as for educated . . . well . . . ahem (clears throat, coughs a little bit) . . . That's debatable.

About 20% percent of the USA population believes that the sun revolves around the earth.

They are probably sports fans.
Embarrassingly Stupid Americans -- One in Five
Believes Sun Revolves Around Earth

The title of this article, that an embarrassingly high number of Americans believe that the sun revolves around the Earth, is only one point argued by the Washington Postâ??s Susan Jacoby, in her attempt to prove that Americans are in serious intellectual trouble, facing a virulent mixture of anti-intellectualism, anti-rationalism and low expectations.

What else is signaling that Americans are becoming increasingly dumbed-down as a society?

* Reading -- of books, newspapers and magazines -- is on the decline. A 2007 study even found that 80 percent of American families did not buy or read a book in 2006.

* Attention spans are declining; Jacoby suggests this is due to television and videos. For instance, between 1968 and 1988, the average sound bite on the news for a presidential candidate dropped from 42.3 seconds to 9.8 seconds. By 2000, according to a Harvard study, the daily candidate bite was down to just 7.8 seconds.

* General knowledge is eroding. This is evidenced not only by the fact that one in five U.S. adults believe the sun revolves around the Earth, but also many others.

Yet, itâ??s not bad enough that knowledge is quickly declining in the United States. On top of that, there is an arrogance about this lack of knowledge, almost as if a good portion of the population is saying, â??We know weâ??re ignorant, but we donâ??t care!â?

Consider, for instance, that a 2006 survey by National Geographic-Roper found that nearly half of young Americans did not think it was necessary to know the location of other countries in which important news was being made. And another one-third felt it was â??not at all importantâ? to know a foreign language.

Why is this so concerning? Because â?¦

Fear and Ignorance Go Hand in Hand
So, yeah! I will concede that more people are going to school than ever before, but they are not better educated.

How can they be?

Especially since many school districts have fired science and math teachers to replace them with more athletic coaches.

Many schools can not afford new equipment for their Physics, Chemistry, and Biology labs, and in many schools students are using outdated textbooks that are falling apart.

Ah! But they can afford to hire more athletic coaches, and buy more new helmets and uniforms for the monkey-boys!

And please! Oh please! Please, please pretty please!

Please don't tell me that sports makes money for the schools!

Sports only makes money for sports, and they could not give a flying fuck about academics!

So, please do SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!

OK???

I must disagree with a fellow defender of this website, and I derive no pleasure at all in what Iâ??m about to say. Other members of this forum might say that there is no need for me to make the following objection, because board messaging is just a bunch of hype and game playing. I speak to Fat Man as a friend. A true friend is critical when he needs to be. Fat Man, I know that youâ??re going through a lot of stress; and you know that you have my complete sympathy. But in your Darwin Award to Craig Storm, you call him a moron because of his steroid abuse. You donâ??t know what kind of person Craig is (any more than I do). You donâ??t know if he is a jerk or a cad, or merely someone who made a mistake. Aside from the fact that you and Ray have become personal friends of mine, none of us really knows what any of the other members are like as people. (Contrary to the critics of this website, people who donâ??t enjoy watching spectator sports are a rather diverse group of people.) Craig may not be fazed at all by this; but I felt that my silence would imply consent on my part.

I have a problem chortling over the misfortunes of others. Iâ??ve previously mentioned a former university football player who was a classmate of mine through school, as well as a neighbor in the subdivision where I lived with my family for a few years when I was growing up. As Iâ??ve said previously in another post, this guy was an arrogant bully who once beat up a friend of mine who was so short that he was having to take growth hormone injections. Another friend of mine had the misfortune of actually playing football with him in school for a few years before we all graduated from high school and got fed up with him because he was so self-centered and conceited. During the last season in which he played at the university, this guy was knocked out during a game. My friend, who either heard about it or saw it happen on TV during the game, later told me what had happened to this guy and chortled about it. Even though I had feared the guy when I was a kid because he was a bully, I took no pleasure in his being knocked out. I understand why my friend reacted the way he did. After all, I couldnâ??t stand the guy myself. I say this not to be self-righteous, but to simply point out that we must not lower ourselves to the level of those who have mistreated us.

Many of the teenage boys and young men who abuse steroids are not even athletes. Many of them have scrawny builds and have low self-esteem. I speak from my own experience. They are anxious to do just about anything to build up their physiques. If I didnâ??t know better, I might be tempted to abuse steroids myself. Some bodybuilders (perhaps not many, but some) donâ??t even have an interest in spectator sports. So, this particular phenomenon doesnâ??t fit into the â??jocks vs. nerdsâ? situation. Many teenagers and young people donâ??t have much sense, which certainly was true of me at that age. So, some of them are going to make serious mistakes that they will regret later.
