The more people know about these preverts and their ways/forms of communication (especially with the internet!) the better chance they have from protect those children from child sexual preditors!

This info is the best I have seen, both in Law Enforcement and to the Public. What you are about to see is a well organized conspiracy to have sex with children. It is a shame that we even have to deal with this but life demands it:

PEDOPHILE SYMBOLS AND CODES:

I recently posted a comment left by a supposed self-proclaimed pedophile, in which he suggests my pedophile symbol collection is outdated by listing variants he and his ilk often use to fool the public. After posting the comment, I was asked for more information on the symbols. I have gone through all of the posts Iâ??ve made previously to gather the symbols and online codes into this one post for easy reference.





These images were discovered by undercover volunteers on a website created by online sexual predators, where they instruct young girls and children that sex with older men is natural and their parents are lying to them and cannot be trusted because they are possessive and donâ??t want their children to feel good.

* A heart within a heart, or â??GLogoâ? â??GirlLoverâ? is used by pedophiles attracted to girls. The heart in a heart, to them, represents a adult/ female child relationship.

* A blue spiral-shaped triangle symbol, or â??BLogoâ? â??BoyLoverâ?, symbolizes a boy (small triangle) surrounded by an older male (larger triangle)- and is meant to show adult/male child relationships.

* The butterfly CLogo a.k.a. â??ChildLoverâ? (commonly looks like four touching hearts) in pink/blue represents non-preferential gender pedophiles (girl or boy attracted, often both).

* The yin-yang looking circle is CGlogo, used in reference to the website, Common Ground, which was created as a place for both girl and boy attracted pedophiles to meet and sympathize with each other.

* The pink/blue triangles is â??AmaroSymbolâ? is a variation of the CGLogo.

Pedobear is said to have originally begun as a way for young members of chan sites (4chan, 7chan, 12chanâ?¦) to call attention to pedophiles in their midst pretending to be kids to get their information. The pedophiles have since adopted Pedobear as their symbol of pride on the chan sites, claiming that the invention of the bear is a â??loving gestureâ? toward them.

* AoA: Short for â??age of attractionâ? meaning the age groups of children they are attracted to
* MAA: Minor attracted adult (used in reverse of the word â??pedophileâ?, though it is the same and places the child as responsible for the abuse)
* AoC: Age of (legal) consent
* CL: ChildLover/pedophile
* GL: Girl Lover/Attracted to girls
* BL: BoyLover/Attracted to boys
* YF: Young Friend, used when speaking about a victim
* CP: Child Porn (Which could mean anything from photos of naked or half-naked children to photos of actual child rape/torture)

* GM: Girl Moment â?? which is time spent with a young girl (that can either be a passing second consisting of nothing more than a glance or a smile, or a lengthy visit with a girl);

As you can clearly see, these sickos are going all out. I even had an event I will share. A few years back I was dating a lady who had an 11 year old-just got a computer. Well, after some police training I went to, I leard about on-line preditors etc (prior to Dateline NBC stuff).

Anyway, I noticed her typing away one night and I asked who she was typing to. "I don't know for sure-just chatting". A few nights later I was walking past her and the computer and she was typing away again. She then asked me if she could go up to the next town and meet this person-the next time we went up that way.

I said sure, but you have to write this to him first. Say, You Dad said it was okay, since he is a cop. He said he would like to meet you and get to know you first before he would leave us alone. He said I can give him your name and stuff so he can check you out-to say time and we can meet quicker. Never heard back from him again. They are out there.

Iâ??ve been receiving quite a few hits from people searching for child porn on chan, so this is my little expose dedication to them.

Many people have no clue what chan sites are. Well, â??chanâ? by definition is nothing more than internet speak. However, there are certain sites that use the term in their names and are preceded by numbers such as 4, 7, and 12. i.e. 4chan, 7chan, and 12chan.

The short of it is, these sites are made up primarily of a bunch of horny losers seeking their release with children and young teens, and of kids who have no life offline and are easily manipulable by online predators. Predators (who are sometimes even teens, themselves) have groomed these kids into believing itâ??s all just a big joke. Theyâ??re not serious. This lie keeps these children there posting intimate thoughts and details about their lives.

Unsuspecting teens post images of their young siblings doing various things â?? at games, playing in the yard, naked in the tub, swimming. They speak of their birthdays, parentsâ?? names, locations, what they like and donâ??t like in lifeâ?¦ Everything a sexual predator is looking for to hunt down their target in real life. Predators give children on these sites what they arenâ??t receiving at home: compassion, understanding, support, a friendly ear without ridicule or punishment. I will repeat for as long as I need to: If you donâ??t talk to your child, someone else will!

When I was a kid, if we didnâ??t get these things at home, we got them at school from the councilor or from friends our own age in our neighborhood. Tangible people we saw and spoke with in the real world. Sure, there were the peers who got troubled teens to do drugs, drink, steal, join gangs, etc.. but they werenâ??t as common place as the other side of it, and most kids back then were raised with a sense of morals and self-respect.

No kid I knew of would ever in a million years post their personal information all over town for the world to see, much less photos of themselves nude or halfway there. There were sexual predators looking for kids to molest and rape, but kids didnâ??t hand themselves over on silver platters back then, and if a kid was approached by a stranger in a car or on the street or anywhere, we screamed and ran like hell away from them.

All this has changed with the dawn of internet sites like MySpace, Facebook, LiveJournal, and yes, chan. There are now plenty of public service announcements explaining to kids what is really going on at the other end of that circuit, and thatâ??s a good thing. The problem is that online predators have their claws dug in so deeply with kids on chan sites and the like, that those kids believe everything they are told, including that adults are lying, exaggerating, that the pedophile problem isnâ??t as bad as they say, that there is no such thing as an online predator because it was all made up by the FBI to control people on the net.

Predators are creating young conspiracy theorists who are terrified of the government so that these kids are too afraid to alert the FBI when they find things they know arenâ??t right. Iâ??ve seen comments by suspected pedophiles saying that if they alert the FBI, cops will raid the houses of every member of that particular forum and go through their computers to tell their parents what theyâ??ve been doing and arrest them for terrorism or some other crime they know will hook the childâ??s fear. Itâ??s the equivalent to a child molester telling their victim, â??If you tell, they will be angry with you and youâ??ll be punished.â?

Yes, they really are this devious and this complex. There are people in this war against pedophiles and online pedophiles who simply donâ??t understand that. They think ranting and raving, trolling their pages, and openly accusing them â?? without proof â?? will make them shake in their proverbial boots and go away. Well, it doesnâ??t work that way. Itâ??s not that simple. They are organized, well equipped with the latest internet security and tech cloaking/scrambling equipment, and they are untouchable by anyone without a badge. Yes, including me.

What I do on this site is expose as much of their techniques as possible to make people aware of how they go about stalking our children and acquiring your trust and their target. This is an awareness site aimed at preventing as many casualties of their assaults as possible. I do not, nor have ever, deemed myself important enough to take down organized rings on pedophiles.

Sure, I was very much in the volcanic pit making changes on the Pagan site, removing sexual predators from it and elsewhere. I do not for a minute claim to have ended that ring of predators working within that site and among the Ning platforms. They are still there seeking new targets, though this time the FBI is monitoring their every move.

One of my colleagues at the time discovered a child porn/rape site hosted on Ning and I helped her report it and have it not only destroyed but every member put on a watchlist. Reporting sites and people like that will always lead to saving abused children, and that is why it is very important for everyone to come forward when seeing it.

Yes, we CAN and DO make a difference â?? even taking a large bite out of the predator/pedophile online industry. But as long as we have sites like chan, where people can freely post child porn, joke about child rape, share information on how and where to obtain targets, and have access to our children who have been manipulated into believing they are exactly what they say they are, the sexual abuse of our children will not end. Especially when we have a society that doesnâ??t want to believe what they hear, doesnâ??t want to see the images of child rape that will expose just what we are fighting, would rather bury their heads in the sand so they donâ??t hear the children screaming and begging for help.

This is something I found about 12chan, one of the more outspoken child porn trade chan sites. Itâ??s from about a year ago, but considering how old these chan sites are and how well established child abusers are on the net, you can believe this is as pertinent now as it was then. The site, by the way, that the linked article speaks of is 12chan â?? verified by the 12chan users on the following screen captured forum:

Paedophile â??librarianâ?? is jailed

A man police said was the â??librarianâ? of a global internet child abuse ring has been jailed indefinitely. Philip Anthony Thompson, of Stockton-on-Tees, will serve at least three years and nine months, but a Teesside judge warned it could be much longer. Thompson, 27, admitted 27 charges, including causing children aged under 13 to engage in sexual activity.


Thompson had 241,000 indecent images of children

The website he was involved with used â??borderline-legalâ? images to bring together â??like-mindedâ? people.

Police have so far pinpointed 360 suspects.

Handing down sentence at Teesside Crown Court, Judge Michael Taylor said Thompson posed a â??very significant riskâ? to the public and therefore he would be imposing an indeterminate prison sentence for public protection. He told him: â??You have shown that you are a very dangerous individual indeed. I consider that you pose a very significant risk to the public and you are a dangerous offender.â? Thompson, who lives with his mother in Gooseport Road, has also been placed on the sex offendersâ?? register for life and banned from the internet and any contact with children.

About 241,000 child abuse images â?? which were still and moving images of varying degrees of extremity â?? were discovered in his possession. Police said more than 130 suspects had been uncovered in the UK and more than 50 arrests have been made. As a result, 15 children in the UK have been removed from situations where they were being abused or were accessible to an offender.

Police revealed the network was first infiltrated by Metropolitan Police officers, working undercover, in May 2007. It became the largest investigation of its kind in the UK, also involving Cleveland Police and the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP).

Users of the forum would post borderline-legal images of children and pass comments on them. Police said â??indicative imagesâ? rather than explicit child sex abuse images were posted online in an attempt to keep the site â??below the radarâ? and prevent it being shut down.

According to CEOP, which co-ordinates covert investigations into internet child sexual abuse, users would make contact this way then meet other like-minded individuals and exchange images in â??different online environmentsâ?.

Its chief executive Jim Gamble said: â??This website â?? whilst appearing to operate on the margins of legality â?? was clearly a front for the sinister, sexual abuse of children and an image trading ground for paedophiles.â? Det Chief Supt Mark Braithwaite, from Cleveland Police, said Thompson had been â??a critical piece of this networkâ?.

â??He was the librarian/warehouseman for a myriad of images that were distributed to like-minded individuals both in this country and elsewhere.â?

As for the doubts this pertained to chan or the suggestions nothing really bad is happening, I have seen what happens on these #chan sites.

The images they claim are just cartoons are fantasy scenarios of child rape. In America, it is â??freedom of speechâ? to make drawings of rape, including child rape, so they use images of child rape to express their preferences without actually coming out and saying it or posting illegal photos or videos of child rape. This is, also, where pedobear comes in. He is the pedophile/child rapist in these scenarios. Since law enforcement canâ??t very well arrest someone for drawing a photo of a teddy bear in a childâ??s bed, regardless of the pornographic dialogue scrawled within, this is the predatorâ??s way of expressing what they like to do to children, situations they like to instigate their abuse.

Several drawings Iâ??ve seen show pedobear in the bathroom beside the tub of the frightened child. Others show pedobear hiding in a closet in the childâ??s room watching them get undressed. Others have pedobear climbing into bed with the child who is either asleep or has a terrified look on their face. All images result in jokes about how the victim is about to be raped, and the comments are very graphic. The descriptions in these comments are so explicitly detailed, even explaining how good it feels to break the hymen in little girls and hear a boy scream at his first anal penetration, that there is absolutely no doubt these people have raped children before, and clearly donâ??t intend to stop.

So afraid are they of having their secret sites and lives revealed that they have managed to brainwash the children who still post there into harassing anyone trying to expose the site or shut it down, including law enforcement. They hide behind the very children they fantasize about raping. Itâ??s like when adults get minors to commit crimes for them.

Iâ??ve had survivor groups infiltrated by pedophiles looking for stories to get off on. Iâ??ve had channers try to ruin me and take me offline, embarrass me by posting about me on Encyclopedia Dramatica (another pedophile haven used to covertly expose anti-pedophiles to the pedophile networks). All in all, itâ??s been an honor to be so feared.

A lot of people out there are afraid to butt heads with pedophile rings on the net because of their ruthless attacks. Well, Iâ??m here to say that Iâ??ve been there, done that, and have the award for being such a threat to their internet world they would fall all over themselves to shut me up. Thanks for the honor!

Recently, I received a comment from a suspected pedophile bragging about the newest additions to their collections. These logos were not created by them but are already in place as innocent designs for unrelated issues. The purpose for using these common images is to fool society into not thinking twice when seeing someone wearing these items. In the words of the person who commented to me:

We do not adhere strictly to the shapes you posted. We can modify them slightly and still recognize other girl and boy lovers. I am sure you have seen the new necklace designed by Jane Seymour. You probably have a pendant of your own. The ladies like them. So do little girls and little girl lovers. When asked about mine and why I wear a bit of womanâ??s jewelry, I say it is a reminder of my dead wife and child. Donâ??t you know, people donâ??t like talking to widowers because it is a sore subject. They would rather change the subject fast, and so I escape further prying into my necklace that signals other girl lovers that I am a GL. For my BL attraction, I don the wiccan triple knot. I know too of GLs who use the Roxy surfer girl heart logo and BLs who use the pagan vaulknot. These are both variations of the GL heart logo and the BL triangle logo but the public will never know the difference.

The main message of the commenter, and all pedophiles, was that no one cares about abused children because society refuses to speak of it or even acknowledge that. I believe it is damned time to change that, and I have something in mind to deal with it, which I will be posting about soon. Be prepared to stand with me.

He was started on â??chanâ? sites, which are websites once used by teens and now infested with sexual predators, pedophiles, rapists, child pornographers, and child molestors.

Channers claim pedobear was created by the teens to alert other users when a pedophile or other sexual deviant was in their midsts. I could never confirm that claim but I will say the only thing I witnessed pedobear being used for was jokes about child rape.

They, the teens themselves, will post images of pedobear in comments about children with remarks of a desire to rape the child. The comments are vile and disturbing. So much so that I once believed they were from adult men posing as young teen boys, then was sickened to discover these writers of such disgusting child rape scenarios were in truth teen boys.

I have known people who went after pedobear on sites like deviantART.com, trying to have it completely removed from sites that allowed minors due to the graphic images and remarks pedobear spawned. These individuals were immediately drowned in attacks and threats of physical violence by these supposed teens, who would seemingly die if they lost their pedobear icon.

Sure, itâ??s fine to mock pedophiles. They deserve nothing better. However, when a person takes this icon and has it saying lewd things, often times graphic things, about the acts of raping children, it is no longer about mocking pedophiles. It is about mocking child rape and those making these remarks should be held just as accountable as someone who jokingly yells â??Bomb!â? on an airplane.

There are many ways pedophiles and sexual predators target children:

1. Find activities in their area involving children â?? such as parties, park outings, sporting events
â?? They will watch the children, photograph the children, and attempt to have a BM or GM, which stands for â??Boy Momentâ? and â??Girl Momentâ?. This includes a conversation with the child, in which they could gain information to get to the child at a later date. However, this could also include just sitting back watching a particular child at play.

They appraise a childâ??s form as if it were that of a stripper in a club, and they write the moment down later for their friends â?? online and in real life â?? with added feelings of desire they had while exploring the childâ??s body with their eyes and filthy mind. Please keep in mind that a child does not have to be nude or in a bathing suit to be visualized that way by these people. They are sick enough to imagine that for themselves.

2. Seek victims for themselves â?? either through the first option or by riding around looking for easy targets: children walking alone, children playing outside with no supervision, children wandering in a store with an inattentive parentâ?¦ I donâ??t have to tell you the rest as â??victimâ? says it all.

3. Seek victims for others â?? through option 1 as well as option 2. The information they attain through their Boy or Girl moment is not always kept to themselves, especially on Alice Day (The pedophile Girl Lover holiday) or NAMBLA day (North American Man-Boy Love Association). They get that information and share it to their pedophilia ring friends so that others will have a chance at acquiring a victim at a later date. The children they snare also often become shared sexual toys for themselves as well as others in their group.

Photos and stories of children are precious to these people and they will even pay money for them and more money for addresses and personal information of targets. A lot of times, the person acquiring this information isnâ??t even a pedophile, themselves. They are just in it for the money from the sales of the photos and information that a pedophile and child predator can use to get their target.

Also remember that men are not the only perpetrators. Women make up a small percentage of sexual predators and abusers, but they DO exist. Even so far as to pimp out their own children for drugs or other selfish reasons. Iâ??m sure youâ??re wondering what can be done to spot or stop these people. You canâ??t very well go accusing every person you see in a public venue of being a sexual predator, nor should you be paranoid. Just careful.

Itâ??s always better safe than sorry, but there is always common sense.

For instance: if you see a lone person with no children sitting nearby staring at the children at play, itâ??s a pretty good chance heâ??s there for less than honorable reasons. Particularly if he/she has a camera and no credentials to any claim of being a reporter â?? which should also be questioned and dealt with as any parent would by calling the editor of his paper to check his story should he say this.

If you are quite certain youâ??ve spotted someone with ulterior, twisted motives for watching your child or others at play, call the police immediately. Confrontation with a group of concerned parents also works. No violence is necessary as these people fear being caught at their private game and will quickly vacate the area. You also send a strong message that your children are protected and NOT easy targets!

* ALWAYS teach children not to talk to strangers.
* ALWAYS teach children to never give personal information to a stranger.
* ALWAYS teach children to never give the information of another child to a stranger.
* ALWAYS teach children to scream, â??NO!â? and â??STRANGER!â? very loudly if they encounter someone asking questions or trying to get them to come with them.
* ALWAYS teach children to use a secret or safe word or password and to NEVER tell ANYONE, not even their friends, what this word is.

You should also discuss police officers with your child. Teach them how to spot a real officer from someone posing as one: â??No, sweety, Iâ??m sorry but I donâ??t know the safe word. Your mommy/daddy was too hurt to tell me. You can trust me because Iâ??m a police officer/fireman/doctor.â? This is NOT okay!

They should tell a teacher or another parent right away. If the person is real, they will be happy to supply proper credentials and will be glad the child was so careful.

Remember, too, that uniforms are a dime a dozen â?? figuratively speaking. Official vehicles, however, are a bit harder to come by. Itâ??s one thing for a person dressed in a â??uniformâ? to tell the child the plain car is undercover, and another when the car actually has the decals, lights, and sirens.

** You should also remember that children want to please adults. They want praise and to feel special. They can either get this from home or from the stranger offering it to them if they would only come with them.

There are certain kinds of children predators go for. Remember that predators are patient. They could be watching a potential target for weeks, sometimes months, before striking. They want to be sure the target meets their criteria before they strike. Some of the markings of a perfect target are:

1. Always alone
2. Latch-key kid
3. Parents/Guardians are either hardly around the child or are always too busy to talk to/spend time with the child
4. Always dirty, hungry â?? suggests the child is not being cared for at home and the parents donâ??t pay attention to the childâ??s needs
5. Is always being reprimanded or admonished by parents or guardians â?? as if they can do no right or are not trusted
6. Is taught to keep secrets, or is in an environment â?? like abuse â?? where secrets are a normal thing
7. Has not been taught to not talk to strangers
8. Has identifying words or phrases on clothes or items (such as their name on backpack, clothes, jewelry)

Now, a lot of these things are also the markings of a child someone wants to care about; however, in the case of a sexual predator, these signs of neglect are the markings of a child whose abuse will go unnoticed or of a child who wonâ??t be believed should they come forward.

There are whatâ??s called â??grooming techniquesâ? that predators follow on kids like this. They include but are not limited to:

1. Being a confident to a lonely child
2. Constantly praising a child who is told otherwise at home
3. Being innocently affectionate to a child who is given no such attention at home â?? simple hugs, holding hands, pats on the head or backâ?¦. All things a parent or guardian would do that in no way suggests sex. That will come in time with longer back rubs, more involved hugging, and so forth.

**Anything a parent or guardian should be doing to fulfill a childâ??s need for love and affection, acceptance and worth but is NOT doing will be fulfilled by the predator in order to gain the childâ??s trust and compliance.

Later, when the perpetrator acts out his long awaited assault, he will blame the child for allowing him to get so close, blame the child for â??flirtingâ?, for â??coming onto himâ?, for â??asking for itâ? by accepting his â??loveâ?.

Every good thing the perpetrator did prior to his assault of the child becomes a tool to use against the child to make the child feel it was all his/her fault.

It is NEVER the fault of a child and every child should be taught that they are NEVER to blame if someone touches them inappropriately.

Even if a parent is one who isnâ??t in the childâ??s life very often â?? perhaps through work or divorce or separation â?? that parent should at the VERY LEAST teach their child that NO ONE has the right to touch their body and that if it ever happens, it is NEVER their fault.

EVERY parent or guardian MUST be sure their child understands that if they are ever touched or assaulted in any way, that child can tell their parent or guardian without fear of being ridiculed or punished. That it is not their fault and the parent or guardian WILL make it right, even if they may not be around for other things. Not being there for a soccer game does NOT mean they wonâ??t be there if someone tries or does hurt their child. The child MUST know and FEEL this is the case.

Coercive persuasion comprises social influences capable of producing substantial behavior, attitude and ideology change through the use of coercive tactics and persuasion, via interpersonal and group-based influences.

The term was coined by Edgar Schein in 1961 in relation to his study of Chinese POWs' indoctrination. According to Schein, the essence of coercive persuasion, ..., is to produce ideological and behavioral changes in a fully conscious, mentally intact individual. Schein notes that elements of coercive persuasion exist in many areas of human endeavor such as college fraternities, established religion, social rehabilitation programmes, the armed forces, and other conventional institutions. Schein also suggests that the popular image of brainwashing as entailing "extensive self-delusion and excessive [mental] distortion [...] is a false one."

Martyn Carruthers has the following definition: "Coercive persuasion attempts to force people to change beliefs, ideas, attitudes or behaviors using psychological pressure, undue influence, threats, anxiety, intimidation and/or stress. (Coercive persuasion has been called mind control and brainwashing.)

Coercive persuasion is studied in managerial psychology, psychology of religion, epistemology, civil law (legal system), politics, diplomacy, and different aspects of sociology.

In academic fields, the terms coercive persuasion, coercive psychological systems or coercive influence are often used interchangeably.

Coercive persuasion is used as a deterrent in diplomacy and warfare, using a threat to use force, or a credible threat to escalate a crisis or war to a more dangerous level.

Some scholars such as Michael Langone or J.K. Ungerleider use the term coercive persuasion in the same sense as brainwashing, thought reform or mind control and connect it to methods of cultic groups in acquiring and retaining members. The term mind control (also known as brainwashing, coercive persuasion, thought control, or thought reform) refers to a process [disambiguation needed] in which a group or individual "systematically uses unethically manipulative methods to persuade others to conform to the wishes of the manipulator(s), often to the detriment of the person being manipulated". The term has been applied [by whom?] to any tactic, psychological or otherwise, which can be seen as subverting an individual's sense of control over their own thinking, behavior, emotions or decision making.

Theories of brainwashing and of mind control were originally developed to explain how totalitarian regimes appeared to succeed in systematically indoctrinating prisoners of war through propaganda and torture techniques. These theories were later expanded and modified, by psychologists including Margaret Singer, to explain a wider range of phenomena, especially conversions to new religious movements (NRMs). A third-generation theory proposed by Ben Zablocki focused on the utilization of mind control to retain members of NRMs and cults to convert them to a new religon. The suggestion that NRMs use mind control techniques has resulted in scientific and legal controversy. Neither the American Psychological Association nor the American Sociological Association have found any scientific merit in such theories.

The Korean War and the origin of brainwashing

The Oxford English Dictionary records its earliest known English-language usage of "brainwashing" in an article by Edward Hunter in New Leader published on 7 October 1950. During the Korean War, Hunter, who worked at the time both as a journalist and as a US intelligence agent, wrote a series of books and articles on the theme of Chinese brainwashing.

The Chinese term (xǐ nÄ?o, literally "wash brain") originally referred to methodologies of coercive persuasion used in the (gÇ?i zào, "reconstruction", "change", "altering") of the so-called "feudal" (fÄ?ng jiàn) thought-patterns of pre-revolutionary Chinese citizens. The Maoist regime in China aimed to transform individuals with a "feudal" or capitalist mindset into "right-thinking" members of the new Chinese social system. To that end the regime developed techniques that would break down the psychic integrity of the individual with regard to information processing, information retained in the mind and individual values. Chosen techniques included dehumanizing of individuals by keeping them in filth, sleep deprivation, partial sensory deprivation, psychological harassment, inculcation of guilt and group social pressure. The term punned on the Taoist custom of "cleansing/washing the heart" (xǐ xÄ«n) prior to conducting certain ceremonies or entering certain holy places.

Hunter and those who picked up the Chinese term used it to explain why, unlike in earlier wars, a relatively high percentage of American GIs defected to the enemy side after becoming prisoners-of-war. It was believed that the Chinese in North Korea used such techniques to disrupt the ability of captured troops to effectively organize and resist their imprisonment. British radio operator Robert W. Ford and British army Colonel James Carne also claimed that the Chinese subjected them to brainwashing techniques during their war-era imprisonment.

After the war, two studies of the repatriation of American prisoners of war by Robert Lifton and by Edgar Schein concluded that brainwashing (called "thought reform" by Lifton and "coercive persuasion" by Schein) had a transient effect. Both researchers found that the Chinese mainly used coercive persuasion to disrupt the ability of the prisoners to organize and maintain morale and hence to escape. By placing the prisoners under conditions of physical and social deprivation and disruption, and then by offering them more comfortable situations such as better sleeping quarters, better food, warmer clothes or blankets, the Chinese did succeed in getting some of the prisoners to make anti-American statements. Nevertheless, the majority of prisoners did not actually adopt Communist beliefs, instead behaving as though they did in order to avoid the plausible threat of extreme physical abuse. Both researchers also concluded that such coercive persuasion succeeded only on a minority of POWs, and that the end-result of such coercion remained very unstable, as most of the individuals reverted to their previous condition soon after they left the coercive environment. In 1961 they both published books expanding on these findings. Schein published Coercive Persuasion and Lifton published Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism. More recent writers including Mikhail Heller have suggested that Lifton's model of brainwashing may throw light on the use of mass propaganda in other communist states such as the former Soviet Union.

In a summary published in 1963, Edgar Schein gave a background history of the precursor origins of the brainwashing phenomenon:

Thought reform contains elements which are evident in Chinese culture (emphasis on interpersonal sensitivity, learning by rote and self-cultivation); in methods of extracting confessions well known in the Papal Inquisition (13th century) and elaborated through the centuries, especially by the Russian secret police; in methods of organizing corrective prisons, mental hospitals and other institutions for producing value change; in methods used by religious sects, fraternal orders, political elites or primitive societies for converting or initiating new members. Thought reform techniques are consistent with psychological principles but were not explicitly derived from such principles.

Mind-control theories from the Korean War era came under criticism in subsequent years. According to forensic psychologist Dick Anthony, the CIA invented the concept of "brainwashing" as a propaganda strategy to undercut communist claims that American POWs in Korean communist camps had voluntarily expressed sympathy for communism. Anthony stated that definitive research demonstrated that fear and duress, not brainwashing, caused western POWs to collaborate. He argued that the books of Edward Hunter (whom he identified as a secret CIA "psychological warfare specialist" passing as a journalist) pushed the CIA brainwashing theory onto the general public. He further asserted that for twenty years, starting in the early 1950s, the CIA and the Defense Department conducted secret research (notably including Project MK ULTRA) in an attempt to develop practical brainwashing techniques, and that their attempt failed.

The U.S. military and government engaged in hysterical accusations of "brainwashing" in response to prevent any consideration by the U.S. public of the detailed confessions made by U.S. military personnel to having engaged in war crimes, biological warfare among them, against the Koreans. (The United States and Biological Warfare: Secrets From the Early Cold War, by Stephen Endicott and Edward Hagerman at York University, Toronto; Indiana University Press, 1998) While the big business media sought to ridicule such accusations they have never addressed the fact that the confessions were extremely specific and detailed, rather than generic. Significantly, all U.S. prisoners who made such confessions upon being repatriated were taken into custody by the U.S. military for "debriefing" where they were ordered to recant all charges or face the death penalty. That fact calls into question the credibility of the subsequent "retractions" made under duress.

Hypnotic, manipulative type mind control has a 3 prong approach. The first is induction of a hypnotic trance. Hypnosis can be obtained by traditional "talk" hypnosis, by chemical means using hypnotic drugs such as flunitrazepan, scopolomine or burundanga or possibly other methods. The second stage consists of inducing, via suggestions and commands the individual to perform actions under the guidance and control of their "handlers". The third is induction of amnesia to the hypnotic event.

New religious movements (NRMs) and the shift of focus

After the Korean War, applications of mind control theories in the United States shifted in focus from politics to religion. From the 1960s an increasing number of American youths started to come into contact with new religious movements, and some who converted suddenly adopted beliefs and behaviors that differed greatly from those of their families and friends; in some cases they neglected or even broke contact with their loved ones. In the 1970s the anti-cult movement applied mind control theories to explain these sudden and seemingly dramatic religious conversions. The media was quick to follow suit, and social scientists sympathetic to the anti-cult movement, who were usually psychologists, developed more sophisticated models of brainwashing. While some psychologists were receptive to these theories, sociologists were for the most part skeptical of their ability to explain conversion to NRMs. In the years that followed, brainwashing controversies developed between NRM members, various academic researchers, and cult critics.

Theories of mind control and religious conversion

Over the years various theories of conversion and member retention have been proposed [by whom?] that link mind control to NRMs, and particularly those religious movements referred to as "cults" by their critics. These theories resemble the original political brainwashing theories with some minor changes. Philip Zimbardo discusses mind control as "the process by which individual or collective freedom of choice and action is compromised by agents or agencies that modify or distort perception, motivation, affect, cognition and/or behavioral outcomes", and he suggests that any human being is susceptible to such manipulation. In a 1999 book, Robert Lifton also applied his original ideas about thought reform to Aum Shinrikyo, concluding that in this context thought reform was possible without violence or physical coercion. Margaret Singer, who also spent time studying the political brainwashing of Korean prisoners of war, agreed with this conclusion: in her book Cults in Our Midst she describes six conditions which would create an atmosphere in which thought reform is possible.

Approaching the subject from the perspective of neuroscience and social psychology, Kathleen Taylor suggests that manipulation of the prefrontal cortex activates "brainwashing", rendering a person more susceptible to black-and-white thinking. Meanwhile, in Influence, Science and Practice, social psychologist Robert Cialdini argues that mind control is possible through the covert exploitation of the unconscious rules that underlie and facilitate healthy human social interactions. He states that common social rules can be used to prey upon the unwary. Using categories, he offers specific examples of both mild and extreme mind control (both one on one and in groups), notes the conditions under which each social rule is most easily exploited for false ends, and offers suggestions on how to resist such methods.

Deprogramming and the anti-cult movement

Both academic and non-academic critics of "destructive cults" have adopted and adapted the theories of Singer, Lifton and other researchers from the inception of the anti-cult movement [when?] onwards. Such critics [who?] often argue that certain religious groups use mind control techniques to unethically recruit and maintain members. At first [when?] many of these critics advocated or engaged in deprogramming as a method to liberate group members from apparent "brainwashing". However the practice of coercive deprogramming fell out of favor in the West and was largely superseded by exit counseling. Exit counselor Steven Hassan promotes what he calls the "BITE" model in his book Releasing the Bonds: Empowering People to Think for Themselves (2000). The BITE model describes various controls over human behavior, information, thought and emotion. Hassan claims that cults recruit and retain members by using, among other things, systematic deception, behavior modification, the withholding of information, and emotionally intense persuasion techniques (such as the induction of phobias). He refers to all of these techniques collectively as "mind control".

Critics of mind control theories caution against the broader implications of these conversion models. In the 1998 Enquete Commission report on "So-called Sects and Psychogroups" in Germany, a review was made of the BITE model. The report concluded that "control of these areas of action is an inevitable component of social interactions in a group or community. The social control that is always associated with intense commitment to a group must therefore be clearly distinguished from the exertion of intentional, methodical influence for the express purpose of manipulation." Indeed virtually all of these models share the notion that converts are in fact innocent "victims" of mind-control techniques. Hassan suggests that even the cult members manipulating the new converts may themselves be sincerely misled people. By considering NRM members innocent "victims" of psychological coercion these theories open the door for psychological treatments.

Sociologists including Eileen Barker have criticized theories of conversion precisely because they function to justify costly interventions such as deprogramming or exit counseling. For similar reasons, Barker and other scholars have criticized mental health professionals like Margaret Singer for accepting lucrative expert witness jobs in court cases involving NRMs. Singer was perhaps the most publicly notable scholarly proponent of "cult" brainwashing theories, and she became the focal point of the relative demise of those same theories within her discipline.

Scholarly debate

James Richardson observes that if the NRMs had access to powerful brainwashing techniques, one would expect that NRMs would have high growth rates, yet in fact most have not had notable success in recruitment. Most adherents participate for only a short time, and the success in retaining members is limited. For this and other reasons, sociologists including David Bromley and Anson Shupe consider the idea that "cults" are brainwashing American youth to be "implausible." In addition to Bromley, Thomas Robbins, Eileen Barker, Newton Maloney, Massimo Introvigne, John Hall, Lorne Dawson, Anson Shupe, Gordon Melton, Marc Galanter, Saul Levine (amongst other scholars researching NRMs) have argued and established to the satisfaction of courts, of relevant professional associations and of scientific communities that there exists no scientific theory, generally accepted and based upon methodologically sound research, that supports the brainwashing theories as advanced by the anti-cult movement.

Some sociologists disagree with this consensus. Benjamin Zablocki sees strong indicators of mind control in some NRMs and suggests that the concept should be researched without bias. Stephen A. Kent has also published several articles about brainwashing. These scholars tend to see the APA's decision as one of no consensus, while what Melton sees as a majority of scholars may regard it as a rejection of brainwashing and of mind control as legitimate theories.

Legal issues, the APA and DIMPAC

Since their inception, mind control theories have also been used in various legal proceedings against "cult" groups. In 1980, ex-Scientologist Lawrence Wollersheim successfully sued the Church of Scientology in a California court which decided in 1986 that church practices had been conducted in a psychologically coercive environment and so were not protected by religious freedom guarantees. Others who have tried claiming a "brainwashing defense" for crimes committed while purportedly under mind control, including Patty Hearst, Steven Fishman and Lee Boyd Malvo, have not been successful.

In 1983, the American Psychological Association (APA) asked Margaret Singer to chair a taskforce called the APA Task Force on Deceptive and Indirect Techniques of Persuasion and Control (DIMPAC) to investigate whether brainwashing or "coercive persuasion" did indeed play a role in recruitment by such movements. Before the taskforce had submitted its final report, the APA submitted on February 10, 1987 an amicus curiæ brief in an ongoing court case related to brainwashing. The brief repudiated Singer's theories on "coercive persuasion" and suggested that brainwashing theories were without empirical proof. Afterward the APA filed a motion to withdraw its signature from the brief, since Singer's final report had not been completed. However, on May 11, 1987, the APA's Board of Social and Ethical Responsibility for Psychology (BSERP) rejected the DIMPAC report because the brainwashing theory espoused "lacks the scientific rigor and evenhanded critical approach necessary for APA imprimatur", and concluded that "after much consideration, BSERP does not believe that we have sufficient information available to guide us in taking a position on this issue."

Two critical letters from external reviewers Benjamin Beit-Hallahmi and Jeffery D. Fisher accompanied the rejection memo. The letters criticized "brainwashing" as an unrecognized theoretical concept and Singer's reasoning as so flawed that it was "almost ridiculous." After her findings were rejected, Singer sued the APA in 1992 for "defamation, frauds, aiding and abetting and conspiracy" and lost. Benjamin Zablocki and Alberto Amitrani interpreted the APA's response as meaning that there was no unanimous decision on the issue either way, suggesting also that Singer retained the respect of the psychological community after the incident. Yet her career as an expert witness ended at this time. She was meant to appear with Richard Ofshe in the 1990 U.S. v. Fishman Case, in which Steven Fishman claimed to have been under mind control by the Church of Scientology in order to defend himself against charges of embezzlement, but the courts disallowed her testimony. In the eyes of the court, "neither the APA nor the ASA has endorsed the views of Dr. Singer and Dr. Ofshe on thought reform".

After that time US courts consistently rejected testimonies about mind control and manipulation, stating that such theories were not part of accepted mainline science according to the Frye Standard (Anthony & Robbins 1992: 5-29) of 1923. But two court cases since have examined testimonies about mind control in accordance with the Daubert standard which emerged in the 1990s.

Kent analyzes and summarizes the use of the brainwashing meme by non-sociologists in the period 2000-2007, finding the term useful not only in the context of "New Religions/Cults", but equally under the headings of "Teen Behavior Modification Programs; Terrorist Groups; Dysfunctional Corporate Culture; Interpersonal Violence; and Alleged Chinese Governmental Human Rights Violations Against Falun Gong".

Brainwashing became a common trope of films, television and games in the late twentieth century. It was a convenient means of introducing changes in the behavior of characters and a device for raising tension and audience uncertainty in the climate of Cold War and outbreaks of terrorism.

* The 1962 film The Manchurian Candidate makes the concept of brainwashing a central theme. Specifically, Communist brainwashers convert a soldier into an assassin through something akin to hypnosis.
* The 1965 film The Ipcress File, a British espionage-film directed by Sidney J. Furie and starring Michael Caine, with a screenplay based on Len Deighton's 1962 novel, The IPCRESS File. The story shows top British scientists being brainwashed using the IPCRESS technique (an acronym for "Induction of Psycho-neuroses by Conditioned Reflex under strESS"). When protagonist Harry Palmer is captured, he is subjected to brainwashing through torture and hypnosis.
* The 1974 film The Parallax View includes a brainwashing scene where the main character watches a film in which words are followed by pictures representing that word, such as "mother" followed by picture of a woman. Over time the images and words become opposites to induce reverse associativity, such as the word "mother" followed by images of destruction.
* The 2001 film Zoolander contains a brainwashing scene where the protagonist, Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller), is brainwashed into assassinating the prime minister of Malaysia.
* The television show Dollhouse (2009-2010) explores the applications and consequences of direct mind manipulation, namely through the use of computers. This show demonstrates a view of the powers of mental malleability, suggesting that entire personalities can be erased and rewritten on a whim.
* The film Brazil, depicts a fascist government similar to that in George Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. The government controls a totalitarian society subconsciously by manipulation, intending to remain in control of the population.
