Hi everyone,

Nicole's arrival two weeks ago prompted me to begin this thread. She asked us all to introduce ourselves, and the fact is, I don't like talking much about myself. So I plan to use this thread to index some of my better posts, as well those posts which reveal personal details about my own life to which I'd like to clue all those newbies in. Whenever someone wants an introduction, I plan to point them towards THIS thread.

I don't think this new thread is really redundant with HugeFan's "Introductions" thread, because the truth is, we all tell many stories at this site about our own lives, and not all of those important stories end up in the "Introductions" thread. The primary purpose of this thread is really the opposite of what the "Introductions" thread was designed to do. Whereas newbies usually introduce themselves to us there, this is where we can store all the info we wish to communicate, rapidly, to them, upon their arrival.

Most of my personal info will be in my next post in the thread, following this one.

Now, yes, it's possible that I could simply post a link to an off-site homepage with an index of my most telling and revealing posts at this site, but that would have a number of drawbacks, and this approach is just so much easier.

This thread isn't supposed to be mainly about me, though, so feel free to write about yourselves here if you like. :)

Cheers,
RF

I've not got a ton to say as far as my life's concerned - you won't be seeing anyone chasing after me in a desperate hope of publishing my autobiography. So here goes - I was born on June 5, 1981, and have lived in England my whole life. I currently reside on my own in a flat here in the UK. As you may see from my avatar, I like 1981, as well as most of the 1980s music and culture, not to mention a fair bit of 1970s stuff. Old music and the internet are two of my top interests in life, and this website accounts for a high proportion of my overall internet usage. I have grown to hate sports through bad personal experiences in high school, not to mention the excessive hype society creates over them to the extent where we have people getting paid millions of pounds a year for being on "top teams", and to the extent where people are excluded and even harassed by their peers for not liking them. Society's unhealthily large obsession with sports and the exclusion I have experienced because of it has drawn me to this website and kept me here. I am somewhat of a "moderate" on this forum, generally, but I can get rather passionate and angry about certain issues, such as obscene wages for players, severe bullying stories in high school and crimes committed by professional sports players which are often taken lightly by the law due to their celebrity status. I may seem rather pleasant and tolerant on this forum but in real life, I have been known to be rather cynical, and I don't think I can be blamed. So yeah, that's just about all you need to know about me. For an example of one thread where I do sway from my rather "moderate" convictions towards a rather extreme, aggressive tone, check out my topic "Goon Supporting Bullying on able2know thread!" over on the Sports Suck subforum. And one last thing - I am somewhat of an anti-fan when our national football team is playing in international tournaments. I like to see them lose - perhaps if they lose enough, these ridiculous wages they earn may get cut a bit. Now that would be a welcome change!

That's enough from me. Have fun on the forums, new members.

Best regards,
i_like_1981

Hi 1981, thanks for your participation up to this point. This thread is also designed for people to provide links to past posts. For example, Fat Man has recorded many personal anecdotes about his own life and often provides links to them to help people better understand who he is. A personal page in this thread might greatly assist him in that endeavour.

I think it would make sense to edit one's "autobiographical" posts in this thread a lot, because we're constantly putting new information about ourselves out there into this sites archives for people to see.

Again, I did not create this thread mainly in order to talk about my own life, but rather to organise those thoughts about my own life that I had already shared.

Cheers,
RF

Excellent idea, recovering_fan. The only problem is that I've submitted too many posts to select links; so, I will provide introductory info in this post for new members to read.

Age: 60 years old

Marital Status: Happily married for over 30 years. Proud father of two daughters.

Political affiliation: None. Was liberal when I was younger.

Religion: Christian (member of a church of Christ). "Funny mentalist" who believes in the Genesis account of creation.

Hobbies: Bodybuilding (more than just a hobby -- for the sake of my physical and mental health), currently writing a novella.

Choice of entertainment: Reading horror fiction (favorite authors: Robert Bloch, Richard Matheson, Charles Beaumont, Ray Bradbury, and Dean Koontz); also a Harry Potter fan; watching episodes of The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits (first season only), The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, and Thriller from the early 1960's; big Mystery Science Theater 3000 fan; listening to certain rock songs from the 1960s and 1970s, decreasing in number from the 1980s to the present.

Brief summary of views about sports: I regard athletes and coaches as individuals, not as a group. I refuse to put them on a pedestal, but also try to not engage in negative stereotyping. Although I have never had any interest in sports, I respect athleticism as an endeavor requiring dedication and self-discipline. No, I don't favor taking team sports out of schools; but neither do I think that athletics should be emphasized over academics. I am a physically active man who knows that high levels of fitness can be achieved without participating in sports. I recognize that there is no debating personal preferences. I'm not opposed to ball games; I'm opposed to negative aspects of the sports culture. I have a low opinion of the sports media -- which (I believe) does not function as a journalistic institution, but only serves as a propaganda mill whose purpose is to turn as many people as possible into sports fans. I'm adamantly opposed to mandatory sports-based P.E. Instead, I favor the retention of the "old P.E." as an elective for athletic students and genuine fitness classes for the nonathletes. I'm concerned about the negative stereotyping of nonathletic boys and detest cliques and bullying.

Life experiences relevant to views of sports: (1) From the 4th grade through junior high (exempted from P.E. in high school as a band student), endured mandatory sports-based P.E., which was absolutely terrible and a waste of time for nonathletic boys. Have been a member of a health club for several years and have enjoyed and benefited from it immensely. The point? I know what works and what doesn't work for nonathletic guys. (2) Was being picked on in the eighth grade, low self-confidence, grades falling. Was therefore sent by parents to a psychologist who turned out to be incompetent. Psychologist sent me to dojo (judo school) taught by former white university football player, who turned out to be the epitome of machismo with an ugly physique. Always felt like an outsider in his judo classes. Felt like he was patronizing me when he promoted me to brown belt (a promotion I did not deserve). Quit in three years. Looked up same instructor eight years later. Instructor claims he "saved (me) from homosexuality," despite the fact that I never had homosexual tendencies. Went on to say that nonathletic men were not "real men." The year before, I had come across a hateful book by a New York sociology professor (Patricia Cayo Sexton) denouncing nonathletic boys and men as "feminized males" with patently false stereotypes. Explained a lot to me. Hence, my strong aversion to the negative stereotyping of nonathletic boys.

Personal views of this website: I consider myself to be a moderate with strong views. We make the very big mistake of succumbing to prejudice and bigotry if we don't recognize individual athletes who are decent persons and young men/women of good will. After all, PE4Life (which benefits nonathletes in more ways than one) was designed by a coach; and one of its leading proponents is a former high-school football player.

Other info: I believe in being civil, try to be understanding, and do have a sense of humor.

I think that if anyone else wants to post more information about themselves on this thread, they should use the same questionnaire structure as Earl's post. I believe most of my answers to those questions can be discerned by reading my post on this thread. So how about we use that as the formula for this thread?

Good idea, especially considering I don't think I'll be able to find all the info I've posted about myself in other threads. Although, keep in mind that some information may change as I may forget to update this post, for example, my age.

Age: 15 years old

Marital Status: Single

Political affiliation: Hard to define. I'm definitely mostly on the left wing and fairly liberal, but my stance on many topics vary.

Religion: None. Raised Protestant, became an atheist after my friend died when we were just children, went through a couple years of being somewhat anti-religious, and eventually reached the point where I'm at now where I don't consider myself an atheist. I don't consider myself anything in terms of religion, and I've now reached the point where I respect a wide diversity of beliefs and am not against religion.

Hobbies: Playing bass, creating architectural renditions if I have the time, snowboarding, working out.

Choice of entertainment: Inception; The Good, The Bad And The Ugly; The Hangover; Der Untergang (Downfall); historical documentaries (mainly of the WWII era, the Cold War era, and sometimes the Ancient Greek/Roman/Egyptian eras and the WWI era); The Superbowl ................................Just kidding!

Brief summary of view on sports: Well, before I state my views on sports, just in case, I should point out that I put text at the very end of the Choice of entertainment heading which is in a light colour, making it less visible, which states that I was only kidding about the Superbowl. You can simply highlight portion if you have trouble reading it. Just thought it'd be a good idea to point that out just in case people missed, it, don't want to start a misunderstanding! Anyway, I don't watch or play sports, although I am friends with several athletes; I am definitely against jocks (please note that when I use the jock, I'm not referring to athletes in general, but the type of athletes who are very unintelligent, act violently, aggressively and even criminally, and often pick on those who are weaker yet more intelligent than them); I believe that professional athletes are overpaid and they even often get away with their wrongdoings without suffering the same consequences that a normal person would (sometimes they don't even have to be professional athletes, maybe even just on the highschool football team); I am not against someone simply because they play or watch sports, but I will be against them if they do something wrong, regardless of whether or not their wrongdoing is associated with sports; I believe sports often cause bullying in the school system; and, like Earl, I believe that nonathletic school students shouldn't be forced to take mandatory sports-based PE classes, but should instead be able to choose between sports-based PE or an alternative PE course that doesn't focus on sports but emphasizes physical fitness.

Life experiences relevant to view of sports: Went through several years of bullying in school which I believe can be associated with sports in some way. In grade 7, as I went to a new school, the only people I knew eventually became my bullies. Being a very shy kid, I couldn't hang out with any other people, and I also didn't want to be a "loner" during break, so I would have to hang out with the kids who would torment me. We would go to the nearby creek, away from the teachers who supervised during our breaks, and we would play this brutal sport where someone would have to carry around a club and chase people and hit them with the club. You had to beat that person with the club until they had endured a large amount of pain (they had to, at the very least, be bleeding), and at that point, the person who was beaten would take the club and continue the game. You couldn't say you didn't want to play, and they would often rig the game against me by having everyone else collaborate to let the club-wielder get to me easier, and they would manipulate the rules when I was holding the club so they could throw rocks at me, but of course I couldn't do the same to them when they had the club. I got out of that group by grade 8. Still, in grade 8, I was a victim of bullying. Most of this occurred in grade 8 PE class, and of course the bullies were the athletes in the class, and I just happened to not be athletic. In grade 9, before PE class, a grade 12 student who was very involved in the school's athletic field walked into the changeroom and threw all of my belongings off of the bench, knocking several papers in my books loose. I was fairly annoyed, as there was plenty of empty space on the benches, and I muttered "Fucking douchebag". He misheard it and thought it was another insult, but I still clarified that I instead called him a douchebag. He slammed me into a few walls (which had hooks on them to hang coats and backpacks), threw me over a couple benches, and hit me in the face. Of course, all of the other grade 12 athletes in the changeroom just laughed their asses off. How tough of him, beating up someone significantly younger than him. I also faced plenty of unfair treatment in grade 9 PE, even from my teacher, for example, I was forced to run laps for the remainder of a 1 hour and 20 minute class that had barely even begun, without slowing down, simply because I didn't catch a baseball that was near me during a game, even though I tried to catch it, but lacked the athletic ability. Now that I've reached the point in school where PE is not a mandatory subject, I stopped taking PE, and instead go to the school's weight room before school when it is open, where I've made much more progress in physical activity in the months that I've been doing it than all of the combined years of mandatory sports-based PE that I took. I even plan on taking a PE course in grade 11 which is entirely focused on working out and weight training, but has zero sports in the curriculum.

Damnit! Since I'm not posting on my own computer right now, I didn't select the option to keep my signed in when I logged in, and when I finished the post and clicked the Submit button, it told me that I needed to sign in to post a response. When it signed me in, I lost all the post, but luckily I copied all of my post after I finished that last heading, however I did put some effort into the heading about personal views on the site, which I lost completely. Anyway, I'll just put a brief summary of my views on this site in that heading. I guess that's actually lucky for the reader, because I'm sure most newcomers won't want to read the large wall of text I've created.

Personal views of this website: I generally agree on most subjects with the other members who are in favour of the site, but I have had disagreements with some members due to the varying extent of how far we take our opinions on this site, as my views on sports aren't really extreme and I've disagreed with some members when I've felt that they've taken their opinions too far.

Other info: Can't think of anything right now, maybe I'll add something to this another time.
