DNA - The Search For Adam (About 60,000 Years Ago!)

OK, this topic is actually related to an earlier topic I had started recently.

Scientist have traced our ancestry back some 60,000 years through mutations in the male Y chromosome. We all come from a common ancestor who lived 60,000 years ago somewhere in East Africa, and he was black.

We ALL are his descendents! Another words, we are ALL Africans!!!

Here is a series of 5 YouTube videos, produced by National Geographic.

New DNA studies suggest that all humans descended from a single African ancestor who lived some 60,000 years ago. To uncover the paths that lead from him to every living human, the National Geographic Society launched the Genographic Project, headed by Spencer Wells.

This study will combine population genetics and molecular biology to trace the migration of humans from the time we first left Africa, 50,000 to 60,000 years ago, to the places where we live today.

Ten research centers around the world have received funding from the Waitt Family Foundation to collect and analyze blood samples from indigenous populations (such as aboriginal groups), many in remote areas. The Genographic Project hopes to collect more than a hundred thousand DNA samples to create the largest gene bank in the world. Members of the public are also being invited to participate.

"Our DNA tells a fascinating story of the human journey: how we are all related and how our ancestors got to where we are today," Wells said. "This project will show us some of the routes early humans followed to populate the globe and paint a picture of the genetic tapestry that connects us all."

The first video gives a brief reference to the Genesis account in the Bible. But the story of the search for our genetic "Adam" begins in a bar in San Francisco, the The Bay View Boat Club in San Francisco that is frequented by Mongolian Immigrants who claim to be descendents of the warrior, Genghis Khan, who lived about 800 years ago.

Spencer Wells, a geneticist took DNA samples from the bar room patrons and determined from the DNA mutations in their Y chromosomes that two of the members of the boat club were descendents of ancient Mongolians who live at the time of Genghis Khan.

It is getting harder to trace back our ancestors because of the immigration of so many people from one country to another, our family tree has become tangled at the top. The best way to trace back our ancestry is to take DNA samples from people still living in the countries of their forefathers. Spencer Wells has had to travel all over the world to collect DNA samples.

Spencer Wells traveled to Virginia where he met an elderly gentleman who was a descendent of Thomas Jefferson. It turns out that the mutation in his Y chromosome shows that Thomas Jefferson was not descendant of Europeans, but rather, it traced his ancestry to the Middle East, to what is now Lebanon and Syria. Jefferson my look European, but his Y Chromosome tells a different story. His DNA can be traced back to an ancestor, designated as M9. The mutation from his male Y chromosome is present in half of all men living today.

Spencer's journey eventually took him to a small island, Pate Island, off the coast of Kenya, a mysterious little place, monuments that look Islamic, and tombs that appear Chinese. The people there appear to be a mixture, some having the lighter skin tone of Europeans, some could be Arabs, and some have eyes that look Asian. For centuries, traders have come from all over the world. This little island is virtually a genetic melting pot. There is actually more genetic variation on this little island than there are in many countries! There, DNA samples were taken from 25 men, and they all have a mutation in their Y chromosomes that scientists call M168, tracing them back to an even earlier ancestor than M9. Men all over the planet share this mutation. Thomas Jefferson has it. Spencer Wells himself also has it. About 3 billion men share this mutation.

But on this Island of Pate, Spencer Wells discovered one man who dose not have this mutation. But he's not the only one. There are other men elsewhere who are not direct descendants of M168. So, M168 can not be "Adam" even though he is far down on the family tree, it is not at the base of the family tree, so there has to be an even earlier ancestor. This man's linage goes back to East or South Africa.

OK, from what I have learned, about 13 million men living today have the mutation from Genghis Khan in their Y chromosomes. Half of all men living today carry the mutation from M9 in their Y chromosomes while most men, but NOT ALL of us carry the mutation from M168 in our Y chromosomes. But ALL men carry the mutation from this earlier ancestor before M168.

Every branch of the human family tree leads back to this much earlier ancestor. M9 goes back about 40,000 years. M168 goes back about 50,000 years. The mutation that is present in the Y chromosome of ALL men living today goes back to a man who lived about 60,000 years ago, who has been designated Adam. It seems more appropriate to call him "Adam" rather than an "M" followed by a number.

He, "Adam" who lived 60,000 years ago, he is at the very base of the human family tree. M168 is his decedent who came much later, and then, M9 came later on. The mutation in ALL the Y chromosomes in ALL men living today can be traced back to this one man who lived in Africa 60,000 years ago. He lived somewhere in the Great Rift Valley in East Africa perhaps in Tanzania or Ethiopia.

We don't all have the mutations from M9 or M186 in our male Y chromosomes. Most of us do, but not all of us. But we ALL have the mutation from "Adam" in our Y chromosomes, going back 60,000 years.

But now, what did this "Adam" look like? We have skulls of modern humans, Homo Sapien, dating back about 100,000 years, but we have not yet found a perfectly intact human skull 60,000 years old. To get an idea of what "Adam" might have looked like, Spencer Well's journey finally took him to Tanzania, the home of the Hadzabe tribe who's DNA traced them directly back to this "Adam" who lived 60,000 years ago. To get an idea what this "Adam" may have looked like, he would have to be midway between the 100,000 year old skull of Casa Man (unsure of the correct spelling, but that's what it sounded like in the video) and the typical Hadzabe male living today.

Spencer enlisted the aid of a forensic police artist, Frank Bender, to do a computer reconstruction of a face that would be midway between ancient Casa man 100,000 years ago, and the face of a typical Hadzabe male. This would indicate what "Adam" who live 60,000 years ago might have looked like.

This "Adam" and his people who lived 60,000 years ago, were the first modern humans who had the ability to think as we do today, and his people were first to develop a spoken language.

Now, in the story of the Biblical Adam, he was the first and only human, and Eve was made from his rib. They were the first, and there were no other humans around yet. And of course, he was believed to have been created about 6,000 years ago.

But this real "Adam" lived 60,000 years ago. NOT 6,000 years, but 60,000 years ago. And of course, there were many other tribes of people around. Ancient man actually goes back much further than 60,000 years, but he is the earliest single individual to whom we can trace the mutation in the male Y chromosome of our DNA.

The DNA in the human genome shows that man and chimpanzee have a common ancestor, but so far, we are not yet able to trace our DNA back to any particular individual man who lived much earlier than 60,000 years.

The other tribes around them eventually became extinct, so their DNA did not get passed down to us. The region where this real "Adam" lived was not exactly what one would call a "Garden of Eden" because this was just shortly after the last ice age. The human race was on the verge of becoming extinct, and it is estimated that our numbers were down to around 2,000 people when this "Adam" lived 60,000 years ago.

So, thanks to this "Adam" the human race got a fresh new start, and we are ALL descendents of this "Adam" who lived 60,000 years ago. We eventually spread all over this planet, developing new cultures, and new languages, etc. etc. So we ALL owe our existence to this "Adam" who lived in East Africa 60,000 years ago. And the Hadzabe tribe are his direct descendents.

Now, our English language has about 30 different sounds, but the Hadzabe tribe have a far more complex language with about 100 different sounds, including clicking sounds. They live the same life style as their ancestors going back 60,000 years. They're hunters and gatherers.

Yes, the real "Adam" did NOT live in a garden paradise eating nothing but fruit. The real "Adam" and his tribe were actually survivors of an ice age. No, the real "Adam" and his tribe were hunters and gatherers, eating BOTH plants AND animals.

Death did not come into this world as a result of the Biblical Adam's sin! No! There was death in this world millions of years, long long long before we humans even existed on this planet. Dinosaurs were killing and eating each other for breakfast until they went extinct, about 60 million years before we finally came along. Yes, some species were only plant eaters, but many species were flesh eaters. It was one great big all you can eat buffet! Yum! Yum! Delicious! Burp! Whoops! Excuse me!

So, God must have been ringing the dinner bell on the dinos millions of years before we finally came along, and then it was our turn to have some meat on the table!

Also, we are NOT born in sin! A baby is born innocent! This "born in sin" bullshit has been used as an excuse to abuse women and children for centuries, and has also been used as an excuse for racism and genocide. So, we seriously need to GET OVER IT!!!

Those Republicans in Mississippi who wish to ban interracial marriage, they're all just drooling moronic bed-wetting ignoramuses who would probably shit in their pants at the mere thought that we are ALL descendents of a black man who lived in Africa 60,000 years ago!

They also hate science, and they fear DNA testing, because not only can it prove our ancestry and how we are descendent from earlier primates, our human ancestry, who's the father of a child in paternity cases, and ones guilt or innocence in a court of law from DNA samples collected from a crime scene to see whether or not it matches the DNA of the accused.

No, these right-wing Retardicans hate DNA testing, because it means that we actually have to collect scientific evidence from a crime scene to determine guilt or innocence, instead of relying on our prejudice to sentence someone for a crime he or she may not have actually committed.

DNA even proves Evolution! It would actually amount to legal proof of it in a court of law!

And the mutation in the male Y chromosome of our DNA proves we are all descendent of a black man who lived 60,000 years ago in Africa.

Now, what did this real "Adam" look like?

We have all seen paintings depicting the Biblical Adam.

OK, this is the Biblical Adam as depicted by Michael Angelo on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, a fine piece of artwork, I'm sure.

But thanks to the work done by forensic police artist, Frank Bender, we now have a fairly good idea of what the real "Adam" must have looked like.
