Wow! This news story of a truly inspiring act of heroism leaves me speechless. His mother must be very proud of him.

Not to take away from him what he did but would the media have mentioned it if he were not an athlete? I think not, that's just the way it is.

Very honorable of him.
That should help balance out this though

Re: Athlete saves the day
Just wondered if maybe he had to diffuse his own situation he had created.During the incident, she reportedly complained that she had been bullied at school
Good, blame the victim of bulling for not being a "tattle tale" A name which was created to protect bullies and their ways. I think most of those who have been bullied don't ever report it, and even at that, the school officials would never admit to it. That puts blame back on them.but officials said she had never approached teachers about any mistreatment.
What little "tattling" i did usually ended up one of three ways.
The teacher put the blame back on myself.
I was told to get "a thicker skin".
Or sometimes the teacher would move my seat to another area, which usually didn't help and then singled me out for tattling.
Notice how none of the above puts any blame on the bully or effects them in the slightest. It doesn't take much of the above to convince you that you just have to live with the bullying. Then the teachers wonder why these students never told them and the bullied snapped. When you are patrolled and watched 99% of the time (thanks for those figures Polute64) it shows me that teachers just aren't paying attention and taking an active roll in stopping bullies.

Re: Athlete saves the day
Good post, rotten. If you haven't read it already, there is an interesting exchange about bullying on Page 21 of the topic "Non-ignorant athlete/sports fan here - please read."
Perhaps I shouldn't mention this; but if you really want to get mad, check out the website of Izzy Kalman, a school psychologist who blames the problem of bullying in the schools on the victims themselves. He says they are the problem. I guess bullies don't have any personal problems of their own. (Kalman's website gets angry responses from middle-aged men who were bullied when they were kids. I wonder why.) Ordinarily, I would expect someone whose parents were Holocaust survivors to be empathetic about human suffering, especially the suffering of children. But Kalman (who seems to be gaining more support) seems to be more empathetic to the bully than the bullied. His website is http://www.bullies2buddies.com. (Oh, sure. One of the bullies I knew when I was a kid loved to torture small animals to death. Yeah, I'd really like to have a sicko like that for a buddy!) Both rape victims and bullied kids are subjected to the "blame the victim" approach. I wonder how Kalman views rape victims.
There are decent anti-bullying websites that you can find on the Internet by doing a Google search on "bullying."

Re: Athlete saves the day
Thanks Earl!
wow, that guy really pisses me off. I had not seen that sight before, but a few snippets i'd like to comment on
His ignore the bully tactic works for about 10 seconds, which i know for a fact. I figured that out shortly after i found myself on the ground trying to wipe the blood out of my eyes. This also applies to his never hit back policy.
His own advice.
Wow.
Where do i start?
Well officer, i couldn't help it, she was born with breasts and all. She was asking for rape.
Well fine citizen, since she was asking for it, we are going to give you an "attaboy" We couldn't possibly put you in jail, that wouldn't be fair to you!
This guy has never been bullied in his life, and was probably actually the bully in his school.
Whats his next move? Tell the blacks of the 50's it was their fault that they were being lynched because they were being too black?
Someone should do something indecent to him. Not sure what, but it would be a favor to the world.

HMM she never mentioned she was bullied."Do not tell the teacher on them. Do not tell your parents or their parents."
His own advice.
Wow.
He seems to have forgotten to add the line "buy a new hat, cause you ain't getting that one back"Calmly say something like, â??I really do need my hat back.â? If they donâ??t return it by the time you need it, you can say, â??I would like my hat back, and I really donâ??t want to get anyone in trouble.â? If they donâ??t get the message and return the hat, then you can report it to the appropriate adults.
Umm Milton Bradley makes games, "the bully game" is not one they publish. They were really just playing a game with you,
Holy cow!!! Jumpin Jesus on a pogo stick!!!(can someone get me some clip art here?) WHAT THE HOLY HELL???Accept that your teasers are not completely to blame for what they have done to you....
Can you really expect them to receive a horrible, horrible punishment when you were practically begging them to torment you? It's really not fair to them.

Well it did say that he's one of Mississippi's 12 best football players, so he was already kind of a regional celebrity.greencom wrote:Not to take away from him what he did but would the media have mentioned it if he were not an athlete? I think not, that's just the way it is.

Re: Athlete saves the day
Hi, rotten. Oh, wow. What do many rapists say when they are apprehended? "She was begging for it." Bullied kids are not supposed to tell their parents?
Children are supposed to tell their parents about their problems so their parents can help them to overcome their problems. I know from personal experience that a child's problem that is not dealt with actually becomes worse over time. Kalman also doesn't recognize that there are different kinds of bullying experiences. Don't strike back? Although I don't think that this approach will always work, I now know of four instances in which physically striking back at the bully put an end to the bullying.

True. Why do they even mention that he plays football? What does that have to do with it? "his football instincts kicked in"????greencom wrote:Not to take away from him what he did but would the media have mentioned it if he were not an athlete? I think not, that's just the way it is.

Thank the Lord for football players. Without them, WHO would save us from gun-toting 14 year olds?

Re: Athlete saves the day
Yeah, i totally expect the rapist to say that, but not the therapist! I've always herd the media talking about people blaming the victim, but i never trusted the media so i didn't know people actually did that. And it's his own words, so i know he's not lying!Earl wrote: What do many rapists say when they are apprehended? "She was begging for it."
Often they fester, and grow, until the bullied snaps, and we know what happens then.Earl wrote: I know from personal experience that a child's problem that is not dealt with actually becomes worse over time.

My point exactly, the public only recognizes a hero if he's an athlete.SportsGuy92 wrote:Well it did say that he's one of Mississippi's 12 best football players, so he was already kind of a regional celebrity.greencom wrote:Not to take away from him what he did but would the media have mentioned it if he were not an athlete? The following webpage is a critical respone to Izzy Kalman's "blame the victim" approach to bullying.

Probably because it describes who he is and gets more interest in the story.Ray wrote:True. Why do they even mention that he plays football? What does that have to do with it? Just like if an actor or any entertainment icon did it. Athletes are celebrities. Get over it.
