I have not seen this conundrum posted nor answered anywhere on the WWW:
How much gasoline, diesel fuel, jet fuel, and other energy sources are used by the world's sports teams and fans?
Even one professional team's useage would be interesting to know! For instance, how much fuel is used by the NY Mets team airplane? How much energy is used to maintain, light, etc. Shea Stadium? How much fuel is consumed by fans commuting and waiting in traffic jams just to view a season's worth of games?
Multiply that figure by all the teams in both leagues. Find the other statistics for the NBA, NFL and NHL. In as much as so many sports fans are experts with statistics, these numbers should be ones the most rabid sports fanatic should know by heart.
Similarly, how about the college level sports?
How about high school seasons. This should be very important given our nation's problems meeting basic education budgets. How much is the team bus using each season.
Now, how about the fuel useage figures for all the countries on the planet that have a sports culture?
All the fuel useage and greenhouse gasses figures must be astonishing. I tried Googling this. Has anybody come across some estimates?
Take care,

Re: global warming/fuel usage
Aha! I knew there was a more sinister side to sports! That's an interesting thought. If we just cut sports out of our lives it would significantly reduce energy use and emissions. Think of the emissions from all the factories in Indonesia and the Philippines turning out Nike shoes, baseball gloves, uniforms, athletic gear, etc.swabby429 wrote:I have not seen this conundrum posted nor answered anywhere on the WWW:

Think of all the mini-van trips by soccer moms to deliver their kids to practices. Consider all the water wasted to keep highschool football fields green.
We have baseball parks dotting our city where the lights are on all the time whether the fields are in use or not.
Think of the forests razed to produce tickets, flyers, brochures, posters, etc. Think of the cost of running the equipment that razed the forests and transported the wood chips around the world for processing to make paper.
Yep, I think you're on to something. If things ever get critical, just outlawing sports would result in as much as 25% energy savings. Not that I believe in global warming though. There was an interesting article in yesterday's paper:

I personally am skeptical about global warming and the "energy crisis". To me, if there really is a problem with a shortage of oil, then why do the automakers keep churning bigger SUV's with even bigger gas guzzling engines. That doesn't make sense!
Wouldn't it make sense to make smaller, lighter cars with smaller engines?
And global warming, I live in the north eastern area of the US and I would like to know when the whole world getting warmer thing is going to start?
It all stems from the "hole in the ozone layer", my question is how long was that "hole" there before we had the equipment to find it? I think it's a natural phenomenon that's always been there and we just didn't never noticed it due to lack of the equipment to do so.
But the world runs on "buzz words" like "global warming", "green", "energy crisis" just to name a few to create hype and get people to spend more on environmentally safe products. What it comes down to is that somewhere along the line someone is making money and lining their pockets.

Somehow, I just don't see a fifteen-year-old boy driving a hummer. Don't try to say you're not fifteen, I know you are.
