OK! Here is some more stupidity!!!

Since this topic was about PETA calling FISH SEA KITTENS and how they are against people eating meat, chicken or fish, some time the Federal Government can be just as stupid as PETA!

Here is a prime example.

This is from Mercury Facts at:

Tuna Meltdown

How Green Groups and the Federal Government
Put Americaâ??s Poorest Children at Risk

By steering consumers away from the fish counter and the canned tuna aisle, overblown warnings about trace mercury levels have directly and negatively impacted public health, especially the neurological development of children born to low-income mothers.

This report offers the first quantitative measurement of that impact.

Approximately 4.4 million U.S. households earning $30,000 or less completely eliminated their purchases of canned tuna between 2000 and 2006. During those years, women in those households gave birth to nearly 260,000 children. And canned tuna was the only source of omega-3 fatty acids their mothers could afford to buy.

These children are victims of public-health malpractice by green groups and the federal government, which have been issuing dire but exaggerated warnings about harmless levels of mercury that have always been present in ocean fish.

Studies show that children of women who consume the most omega-3-rich fish while pregnantâ??specifically canned tunaâ??score the highest on intelligence and motor-skills tests. And children whose mothers eat no fish during pregnancy (getting no omega-3s in their diet) are 29 percent more likely to have abnormally low IQs.

The scientific consensus about the health benefits of eating fish, especially during pregnancy, has taken a back seat to activist warnings and sensationalistic journalism about trace levels of mercury which have never been shown to be harmful. The result has harmed Americaâ??s poorest and most vulnerable children.

There have been no cases of fetal mercury toxicity due to fish consumption reported in the United States. Yet the federal government and numerous environmental advocacy groups continue to pretend otherwiseâ??putting the health of countless children in low-income households at risk.
So, it turns out that the mercury levels in fish was just a lot of overblown hype, that the small trace amounts of mercury is what naturally occurs, and as always been in fish, long before the industrial era.

And thanks to all the bullshit and hype, a lot of children in poor families were deprived of getting the essential Omega 3 fatty acids, and have lower IQs as a result.

Oh well!!!

I guess these kids who are mentally or intellectually disadvantaged as a result of not getting Omega 3 fatty acids in their diets, they can always play football! Eh?

Sounds like confusion. Mercury is pretty bad in swordfish and shark still (though I know very few people who eat those). But tuna steak is overall safe unless you eat it everyday. Canned tuna has even less than tuna steaks...and if you get the cans labeled "Chunk Light" you have even less.
Not to mention all the other types of fish you can eat. Seems like there needs to be better education on the subject.

Yes, we do need more accurate information on this without all the hype.

With most fish, on would have to eat about 20 to 30 pounds per day over a lifetime to accumulate enough mercury to cause any harm.

Now, I do have a pretty big appetite, but even I am not that big of a glutton!

I'm just a little glutton! :D :D :D :D :D

I don't know if it is true or not but if you eat a fish that has alot of mercury when you are pregnant can your baby have disabilities? I heard that on some medical show but I don't kow if it is true.
I think the worst time to have a heart attack is when you are playing a game of charades...or a game of fake heart attack.

Well, it would be true, but only if the fish had in fact, high enough levels of mercury.

But the truth is, the mercury levels have been exaggerated.

Most of the very small traces of mercury in fish is what occurs naturally.

You would have to eat about 20 to 30 pounds of fish every day over a lifetime to accumulate harmful levels of mercury, but you would probably die of old age before that happens.

Do you think you can eat 30 pounds of fish every day?

I know I can't and I'm a big fat-ass!!! :D :D :D :D :D

I heard something about a toxic substance that lasted through many generations. It actually mutated the genes of parents and, thus, mutated the genes of the children. The children were being born with things like Cerebral Palsey, spina bifida, and so on... some were even born with extra digits and limbs. The substance was originally used in the Vietnam war to make trees drop their leaves so the pilots could spot enemies on the ground, but it affected both sides apparently.

Though something as innocent as coffee can be a hazard for an unborn child. Caffeine increased the chance of miscarriage greatly.

And, don't worry sports rox, I've eaten only 1/10 the maximum weight, except the meal was of chicken and fries.
