Sick of Football

Whenever I go out to eat with my staff, partner or a client/vendor, almost always, without fail, the topic of football comes up. "How about them VOLS?!" I could care less. I despise football, don't know (or care to know), any of the players, and could care less if the VOLS always lost. I feel the same way about other teams, since I live in TN, the VOLS seem to come up the most often. This tends to dominate half the conversation. I think it best to change the subject.

Any one else have a similiar work experience?

Are you kidding? Of course! I'm guessing Vols is short for Volunteers. I don't know anything about football either. And also don't care to know. I want to have a t-shirt made that says in giant letters, "I HOPE WE LOSE!".

Are you kidding? It's all I hear! That's why I volunteer to drive the truck and deliver parts everyday. It's better than sitting around and listening to that gibberish.

Somewhat...I have two coworkers, each from a college that's a main rival of the other, so they have all these college basketball conversations, etc.

As bad as it is, it isn't as bad as the coworker who brags about how many geese he killed on his hunting trips.

I have this too, I'm from Pittsburgh and everybody is a Steelers fan at work and can't stop talking about them. Even some women do. When its not that, they talk about the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball. So annoying.

And so BORING! I'm pretty imaginative but I don't think I could think of ANYTHING interesting to say about a football team or a baseball team or what they do. There's just so much you can say.

The most boring thing ever is when the players are interviewed. They never say anything of value: well, Jim, we're gonna try our best and pull together like a team and do our best to beat the other team. and um the best team will win. and one team will lose.. umm.. ha ha ha ha ha ha ha stupid jocks!

It amazes me how people can keep up sports conversation for so long. I mean, really, all it is is just "How 'bout dem (insert team name here)?", "We whooped their asses!", "Wait till next year!" etc., along with how well or badly some player kicked or threw the ball. YAWN.

You would think that the way they ram sports down everyones throat people would get sick of sports, but some of these idiots watch 4 or 5 games a day... WHAT THE HELL?

Yep.. it's a mystery. Maybe they're just lonely and it's sort of like nervous chatter. Nah.. everybody I hear is pretty obnoxious and loud so I don't think that's it. I don't know what their major malfunction is --I just stay as far away as possible.

There is the attitude of people saying "don't push your religion on me." Now that's a little dicey, with probably negatives on both sides of that in terms of policy, but here we have a very clear case of people pushing their defacto religion on YOU. Sports is the "new church." Think about it. They have their own massive places of worship, filled with fanatic followers, the coaches are the "priests," the playbook is the "bible," and maybe the players are the "alter boys!" lol

I realize that you cannot just say to them, although you may want to, "Listen you piece of shit, I don't follow sports!" hahahaha This movement is almost like that old cartoon "Hero of the Beach" where the beer bellied bully picks on the skinny guy. Then he works out a little and meets up with the bully, and "pop!" He knocks out the fatass!

oh yeah! I'd forgotten about that old cartoon in the back of comic books! That was a classic --Charles Atlas wasn't it? But you're right --sports ARE pushed on us and as relentlessly as a door to door evangelist! People --the sheep of this world --find sanctuary there. It gives them some meaningless drivel to mouth that they know will be accepted anywhere --anywhere until they happen to say it to one of us! 'Cause I ain't taking it anymore!
