I have something else I want all of you to think about. Yes, the salaries of some athletes are outrageous. But why just pick on them? What about other entertainers, such as actors or musicians? Not to mention people like Paris Hilton, who only have money because someone else in their family worked hard for it.

I agree with you 100%. Paris is just rich white trash as are many in the entertainment profession. They tend to be less violent and murderous than their sports counterparts however. But some are no better. You see, to me sports is just another branch of the entertainment industry, a shameful and decadent side of our culture that the public worships. Actors seem to be better educated than ball players however, they don't need subtitles when they speak.

Here's another problem I have with some people here. Many of you like to believe you are superior to sports fans because you don't "follow the crowd" and you "resist the influence of the common herd", as it says on the front page of this website. I've got news for you. Most, if not all sports fans, including myself, began to enjoy sports during the early childhood years, as in before school, where concepts like "cool/uncool" and "popular/unpopular" are first introduced to children. So most sports fans were into sports long before there was any kind of "herd" for them to follow in their lives.

Just speaking for myself, I don't look down on sports fans. (Hey, my older daughter, whom I'm very proud of for all her academic achievements, was a big football fan at the university from which she just graduated. I never held that against her.) I am critical of certain attitudes of some sports fans in certain situations, but that doesn't mean that I look down on them. I don't look down on or think that I'm superior to most people.

A thing about gamers it that we're called fat and no lifers living our mother's basement! This is coming from the sports fan!

Hey, I defend gamers. Both of my daughters love to play video games. (I used to play Sonic the Hedgehog video games a lot. ) They've played video games for over a decade, and both of them have excelled academically and have a lot of character. (They certainly did better than I did when I was in high school and college, from which I didn't even graduate!) You have my complete sympathy and support. I know how it feels to be accused of being something that you're not and would never be. I think that any sports fan who says that about gamers is a dumb jerk. I've always thought that people who constantly run other people down must be insecure; otherwise, they wouldn't care what other people do. I don't think, though, that either SportsGuy92 or Polite24 happens to fall into the jerk category in this regard. But I do realize that more than a few teenagers who are sports fans make these stupid comments about gamers. Studies have shown that playing video games developes eye-hand coordination. Sergey, my father had a saying that I think is appropriate for me to repeat to you: "Don't let the bastards get you down."

I obviously can't speak for everyone but "resisting the influence of the common herd" or "not following the crowd" does not mean that someone thinks they are superior.

It only means that a person chooses to do something different than everyone else --which takes guts. It takes self-confidence and bravery to act on your own without the support and acceptance of those around us. And those are positive traits.

And what might be an even bigger accomplishment than following your own path is being aware that there are alternatives --that there are other possibilities, other things in life than what everyone around us insists we do. Many people don't even raise their heads to look around --they just follow the herd without thinking. And confine their efforts within the narrow framework society has them bound in.

You say people develop a liking for sports as young kids. I agree. But that doesn't mean they're not following the herd. Social conditioning starts before we can speak. Did you invent football or basketball? No. Someone taught you. And you swallowed it. Hook, line, and sinker. I did not.
