"DEAL WITH IT!"
which is exactly what you are going to have do for THE REST OF YOUR LIFE when it comes to sports.
They aren't and never are going anywhere.
Deep down you people cannot be that dumb and blind to think sports will go away, and it pisses you off like none other.
One possible benefit?

Testy, testy... did I strike a nerve, perhaps?
And yet we're not the ones going to sports lovers sites bitching and moaning, now are we?
You sports lovers stay on your side of the fence, and we'll stay on ours.

You might be a sports fan/jerk if...
You've ever started a sentence with "Buddy of mine..." or "I got a buddy..."

I don't know if they'll ever go away or not, but hopefully someday they will be seen as what they are, simply a mindless distraction, as opposed to something that is given way more importance than it deserves, and must be shoved down everybody's throats whether they like it or not. Plus professional athlete salaries could be cut way down, although why do we even have professional sports in the first place?
Professional sports. Kind of an oxymoron, don't you think?

Yes, it really is JUST A GAME.
Re: One possible benefit?
I love gaming (video games and board games more specifically) and even like some sports like golf and soccer, but really they are what they are: games. Sure, good things can come of games. I met one of my best friends in Cross Country. But the game itself is still just a game, a silly little distraction that we do for fun, and really what I just said about sports could be said of anything, and if sports didn't get you what you value in life that it's gotten you, something else probably would've. It's not sports so much that I have a problem with, just that they're overrated. No one is a hero for kicking a ball around, they're a hero if they run into a burning building and save someone else's life. Schools shouldn't be judged by how big their gyms are but by how many students get into good colleges and how many of them get good jobs. You can still be a man if you don't like what a lot of men love, and there's no reason you should have to encourage others to play their games better (pep assemblies) even if it might be a nice gesture.
